Historical Significance of St Louis in Tobacco Production

St Louis led the nation in tobacco production in the early 1900s, accounting for nearly 40% of the country's supply, with John Weisert being a prominent figure through his over 100 brands. The legacy of the John Weisert Tobacco Company is commemorated by the historic landmark of their building, still bearing the company name on its antique brick facade. The decline of their cigar production began with the passing of Louis Applestein, the city's last cigar hand-roller at 83 years old. Subsequently, the business dwindled until the founder's grandson, the sole remaining employee, had to close its doors after 133 years in the industry in 1989, marking the end of St Louis's tobacco manufacturing era. Preserving Artistic Contributions

During that time, many artists contributed to the vibrant designs of tobacco labels, often facing economic hardships and lack of recognition for their work. While most of these artists remain unknown to us, we can honor their talent and keep their art alive for posterity.
