Vintage 1960s The Atlantic Refining Company Stock Certificate! Oil Americana! Brown

12" x 8" ~ little to no wear

Founded in 1866 as the Atlantic Petroleum Storage Company, this firm was a trailblazer in the oil industry. It was later acquired by John D. Rockefeller, becoming part of his influential Standard Oil empire. The company's reach expanded to cover Delaware, southern New Jersey, and the southeastern tip of Pennsylvania, establishing its dominance in the Philadelphia region.

Due to antitrust concerns, the Standard Oil Trust was ultimately dismantled. Atlantic, one of the eleven companies that gained rights to the Standard name, covered Pennsylvania and Delaware. However, Atlantic discovered that its name held more marketing appeal than Standard, which was unusual then. Consequently, it chose not to use the Standard name.

The Atlantic Refining Company was a crucial player in the nascent oil industry and strongly connected to the Standard Oil legacy. Its history is interwoven with significant figures and events in the petroleum industry.

Stock certificates are truly rare treasures. Once they find their way into museums or private collections, their availability dwindles. These papers are steeped in history, with the first issuance dating back to the Dutch East India Company in 1606. Fast forward 407 years, and the Walt Disney Company released one of the final paper stock certificates by a major corporation in 2013. Owning such a document is a unique opportunity to possess a piece of history.
