The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia is cast with Proclaim Liberty throughout all the Land, a line from Leviticus - and its famous crack, the story goes, widened sometime in the 1840s, and instead of melting it down and recasting it, Philadelphia simply retired the bell, crack and all, which is why a cracked bell came to mean more to Americans than a perfect one ever could - and 'Tis the Star-Spangled Banner is Francis Scott Key's own line from the poem he wrote after watching the British bombard Fort McHenry in September 1814. Put them in Dick Tracy's mouth for the 200th birthday and you've got a sticker that says law, order and Old Glory all at once.

🇺🇸 Two hundred years

These came out for the Bicentennial, the run-up to July 4, 1976, when every company, comic strip and cereal box in the country found a way to wrap itself in red, white and blue. Nothing printed on them gives a year - the dealers who carry this same pair call it 1975 or 1976 - and the Tracy art matches the strip as Gould was still drawing it.

It was a big party. The American Freedom Train, a steam-pulled museum on rails, toured the country in 1975 and 1976 with the nation's treasures aboard, towns repainted their fire hydrants as Minutemen, and on July 4, 1976 the tall ships of Operation Sail filled New York Harbor. Little stickers like these were part of that same flag-waving spirit, the kind of thing a kid stuck on a lunch box or a bike fender that summer.

🕵️ Chester Gould's detective

Chester Gould drew Dick Tracy for the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate, the comics arm of the Chicago Tribune and the New York Daily News. Gould first pitched him as Plainclothes Tracy; Captain Joseph Medill Patterson, the syndicate's boss - remembered in newspaper lore as the editor who saw something in a struggling cartoonist's pitch - changed it to Dick Tracy, and the strip debuted on October 4, 1931, in the middle of the Chicago gangster years. Old-timers in comics fandom like to point out that by 1937 it was the third most popular strip in America, behind only Little Orphan Annie and Popeye - not bad for gritty crime instead of gags. It was a hard, violent strip for its day, full of grotesque villains like Flattop, Pruneface and the Brow, and it gave the country the two-way wrist radio in 1946, long before anybody wore a phone on their wrist. Gould kept drawing it until he retired in 1977, so these Bicentennial stickers come from the very end of his more than forty-five years at the board. Along the way Tracy had his own radio show, Republic movie serials in the late 1930s and, much later, the 1990 Warren Beatty movie; after Gould retired, Max Allan Collins took over the writing. But this is Gould's Tracy, the original, with the hawk nose and the jaw you could break a brick on.

🗽 About these

Every one I have is the same unused pair. Frame them side by side, put them in a comics collection or a Fourth of July display, or give them to the friend who still has a Crimestoppers badge. Sellers still pair the button with copies of Lobo's Back #1, a Keith Giffen fan site took Bite Me Fan Boy for its name, and the Busy Beaver Button Museum has the button in its collection. In the book Lobo gets himself killed and then fights his way back out of both Heaven and Hell, because naturally neither one would keep him.

👽 The joke that got out of hand

Lobo first showed up in The Omega Men #3 in June 1983, created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen - just another heavy for hire. Comic shop old-timers will tell you Lobo spent years as a footnote, the kind of character back-issue bins were built for. Then in 1990 Giffen and writer Alan Grant brought him back in Lobo: The Last Czarnian as a parody of the grim-and-gritty antiheroes everybody was buying, and the joke backfired in the best way. Giffen said later he'd meant Lobo as an indictment of the Punisher and Wolverine hero prototype, and somehow he caught on as the high-violence poster boy. Go figure.

Among longtime fans, Lobo's own backstory carries its own dark punchline: he's remembered as the last surviving Czarnian, a grim mirror of Superman's last son of a dead world - except in Lobo's telling he's the one who wiped out his home planet himself, and he isn't the least bit sorry about it. That's the attitude Bite Me, Fan Boy was built to sell: insult the very people buying the comic, and watch them love it more for the nerve.

🎨 Simon Bisley

Bisley came out of British heavy metal art and the legendary British anthology 2000 AD, and his Lobo looked like an album cover - huge muscles, lurid color, chains and cigars. The company took the name DC Comics officially in 1977. By 1992 the speculator boom was in full swing, with foil covers and number ones being bought like lottery tickets, and Lobo rode it to his own ongoing series, which ran until 1999. The bubble burst, but the Main Man never really went away.

🤘 About these

They're 1 inch across. Valley was Azrael, created by Denny O'Neil and Joe Quesada in 1992, a grad student who'd been conditioned as an assassin for the Order of St. Dumas, and he built himself that armored suit. KnightsEnd is where Bruce, healed and retrained by Lady Shiva, takes the cowl back. It ends in the Batcave: Bruce opens a hatch over the very hole he fell into as a boy and lets the sunlight into the night lenses of Valley's helmet, and Valley takes the mask off and gives it up. Fans call the whole three-part run the KnightSaga. DC's writers built it to answer the gritty, "violent hero" style that ruled 90s comics and show the traditional Batman made the better hero; they even drew Valley with that style's ballooning muscles and tiny feet. Which is exactly what you're looking at: the classic Batman winning.

My favorite detail is that cracked bat on the back. Every KnightsEnd cover carried a bat-in-oval badge in the corner that starts out shattered on Part One and pieces itself back together issue by issue until it's whole on Part Ten. That's still the only word for these. This is one of Alan-Whitney's Glo-Colors Bat Stickers: a solid black bat silhouette, wings spread flat and scalloped along the bottom edge, stamped onto a disc of bright fluorescent paper. Peel the kraft backing off and it's ready for a book, a bicycle, an auto bumper, a window or a wagon — that's the maker's own list off its old store pack, not mine. I'm holding a real stack of these: pick Red, Green, Yellow, Pink, Orange, Light Orange or White, or grab all 7 Colors and have the full run.

The stickers themselves don't say a word: no name, no date, no price, nothing printed front or back, just the bat on its disc and plain kraft paper behind it. They come loose, without a card. The bat is what gives them away. The same bat, in the same day-glo colors, went out five to a cello pack under a printed header card, and that card says it best, so here it is close to word for word: "5 GLO-COLORS BAT STICKERS, (c) 1966 Alan-Whitney Co. Inc., New Haven, Conn., Made in U.S.A., 5 for 39c, Peel Off Backing Paper — Apply to Any Smooth Surface, for Books, Bicycles, Auto Bumpers, Windows, Wagons, etc." Thirty-nine cents for five bat stickers, and a company telling you flat out to stick one on your bike. That's a great pitch on its own, sixty years later. Alan-Whitney was a New Haven, Connecticut outfit, and bat stickers weren't their only novelty — they also made the 1964-65 Space-Bird fabric kite, a nice bit of color in its own right, and Hal Levine, a name tied to Alan-Whitney Company, is acknowledged in "The Complete Book of Kites and Kite Flying." So this wasn't a nameless factory stamp; it was a small company with a name behind it, making the kind of five-and-dime novelties a kid would actually beg for.

1966 also happens to be the year the Batman TV series exploded onto ABC and turned the whole country bat-crazy — Adam West, Burt Ward, POW and ZAP right there in your living room, and every dime store and drugstore counter in America stocking up on anything bat-shaped to catch the wave. The show premiered on January 12, 1966, with Adam West as Bruce Wayne and Batman and Burt Ward as Dick Grayson and Robin, keeping Gotham City safe twice a week that first season in full camp color, and it ran 120 episodes through March 1968. In their 2016 book TV (The Book), critics Alan Sepinwall and Matt Zoller Seitz ranked it the 82nd greatest American TV show of all time, and wrote that West's performance took decades to be properly recognized. Alan-Whitney's header card doesn't carry a Batman name or a comics company's copyright line anywhere on it; it just sells "Bat Stickers." So I read it as a small novelty maker riding a national craze with its own bat design, not as an officially licensed tie-in — and either way, it's exactly the kind of thing that went home from a dime-store counter in 1966 and ended up on a bike fender by the weekend.

These are unused, still riding on their original backing paper — never peeled, never stuck to anything. The kraft-paper liner on the back carries a straight split line - that's where the peel-off backing opens, just as the maker's pack told you to peel it; that's how a sixty-year-old peel-off backing looks. I've got dozens of these across seven colors, so think of the photo as the floor of the stack, not the ceiling — most of what I'm holding looks just as crisp or crisper than the one pictured.
