Turn it over and it's exactly what it says it is: a desk blotter, soft rose-pink blotting paper made to soak up wet ink. Turn it back and it's a full real-estate pitch, gold-brown ink on cream cardstock inside a pretty Art Nouveau border: land for sale in Needham, Massachusetts, five cents a foot, courtesy of one Robert H. Storer. Somebody's clerk or agent kept this on a desk, dried a pen on it, and looked at the ad again every single time. That's advertising specialty work at its most quietly clever, and it's exactly why pieces like this survive at all — they earned their spot on the desk.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🏡 The Pitch, Word for Word\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere's the ad, exactly as it's printed: \u003cstrong\u003e\"Fine Land for Home and Garden. In Needham — 5 Cents a Foot. About 90,000 square feet of land. 8 minutes walk from railroad station. 5 minutes walk from electric cars, connecting with Boston Elevated at Forest Hills. Water, Electricity and Telephone available. Have you a prospective purchaser for all, or part? Robert H. Storer, Owner. Post Office Box No. 7. Boston, Mass.\"\u003c\/strong\u003e That's the whole pitch, and it tells you plenty about its day without meaning to. Running water, electric light and a telephone line get top billing as amenities, because back then they weren't a given — they were the reason to buy. And Storer isn't shy about selling the whole ninety thousand feet or carving it up: \"all, or part\" is the wording of a man who just wants the land moved, one lot at a time if that's what it takes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🚋 How I Date It\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe line that pins this down is the one naming the electric cars reaching Boston's Elevated terminal out at Forest Hills. That terminal opened on November 22, 1909, so this blotter had to be printed after that — it's advertising a link that didn't exist the week before. Put that beside Lester Ralph, the artist on the picture panel, who was working right up to his death in 1927, and the 1910s is where I land it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNeedham itself had four separate streetcar companies running in this era, each its own little railway. The one that headed toward the city was the Needham-Boston Street Railway, running from 1899 to 1920, turning east onto Dedham Avenue and then down what is today the grassy median of Harris Avenue, on toward Roslindale and into Boston — a dime's ride into the city. Put a trolley together with the brand-new El at Forest Hills and Needham land was a commute from downtown Boston - that's exactly the pitch this blotter is making.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🧮 A Nickel a Foot\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDo the arithmetic the blotter hands you: about 90,000 square feet at five cents a foot comes to roughly $4,500 for the whole parcel — a little over two acres. The number sits right there in brown ink, plain as day, and there's something wonderful about holding the paper that offer was printed on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🎩 \"Favored by Fortune\"\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe panel on the left is the reason I'd frame this even without the real-estate copy. It's titled, right beneath the image, \"8863 — Favored by Fortune,\" credited \"Copr. Lester Ralph\" and \"The Knapp Co. N.Y.\" A young woman steps down from a carriage in a big black hat, a black fur stole over a long blue gown, long white gloves and a small cluster of violets pinned at her waist, a small long-haired brown-and-white dog cradled in one arm. You can make out the carriage's red door behind her. It's a glamour picture, and here it's doing double duty, selling the good life a Needham house lot was supposed to deliver. \"Favored by fortune\" is exactly the feeling a land ad wants you to walk away with.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🎨 The Artist: Lester Ralph\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLester Ralph (1876 or 1877 – April 5, 1927) was the son of Julian Ralph, a well-known journalist of the day, and made his own name as an illustrator. Early on he painted scenes from the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and the Boer War. He illustrated Mark Twain's \"Eve's Diary\" for Harper's and Owen Wister's \"Lady Baltimore,\" did work for Scribner's and Collier's, and in 1919 drew a Girl Scout recruiting poster. His pictures were distributed in America through The Knapp Company of New York — which is exactly the credit line printed on this blotter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e📜 The Knapp Co. of New York\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Knapp Co. traces back to the lithography house Sarony, Major \u0026amp; Knapp, active in the 1850s and '60s, and to Joseph Fairchild Knapp. His son, Joseph P. Knapp, went on to found the American Lithographic Company and later bought the Crowell Publishing Company. So the little glamour print riding along on this blotter comes out of a genuinely major printing dynasty, even though its actual job that day was to sell house lots in Needham.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🌸 The Reverse\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTurn it over and the whole back is bright rose-pink blotting paper — plain, unprinted, with the soft, slightly fuzzy texture made to pull ink off a wet page. It's the working half of the object, and the detail that tells you this is a blotter and not a card. They vary a little one to the next, but every one carries the same ad and the same little \"Favored by Fortune\" picture. I like this one because it isn't just an ad — it's a piece of early American illustration printed on a slice of Boston commuter history, on the very item that used to dry the ink on somebody's actual desk.
