This is an antique 1920s Heather Brand Eatmor Cranberries label for a quarter-barrel box, packed for the American Cranberry Exchange of New York and Chicago. A tall sprig of flowering heather stands against a soft watercolor sky inside an oval, HEATHER BRAND runs down both side panels, and EATMOR CRANBERRIES of NEW JERSEY arches across the top.

🏷️ What's Printed on It

Eatmor Cranberries of NEW JERSEY

HEATHER BRAND (down both sides)

ONE FOURTH U.S. STANDARD BARREL

PACKED FOR THE AMERICAN CRANBERRY EXCHANGE

PACKER'S NUMBER (an empty box for the grower's number)

NEW YORK, CHICAGO

The Boston Public Library keeps a Heather quarter-barrel Eatmor label in its print collection and dates it about 1920 to 1929, along with the American Beauty and Monmouth labels from the same New Jersey family. The empty Packer's Number box is where each grower stamped his number, so the Exchange knew whose bog the berries came from.

🍒 Eatmor and the American Cranberry Exchange

New Jersey's cranberry business grew up in the Pine Barrens, with early growers like J. A. Fenwick and Joseph J. White near Pemberton and the Budd family, and it was White who showed that the Pine Barrens' soil suited cranberry bogs. In 1895 New Jersey and Massachusetts growers formed the Growers' Cranberry Company, and in the spring of 1911 the growers' sales companies of New Jersey, New England and Wisconsin joined as the American Cranberry Exchange, based in New York with a Chicago branch.

The Exchange started using the Eatmor name in 1916, advertised it nationally from 1917, and by its own count lifted growers from $6.08 a barrel to an average of $9.95 between 1917 and 1935. By the 1930s its ads were running in Good Housekeeping and Better Homes & Gardens. Eatmor meant a grade as much as a name: Whitesbog set it at 90 percent colored berries or better, no more than 125 to the cup, and fruit that could last fifteen days on the road. The Exchange moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1951, became Eatmor Cranberries, Inc. in 1953, and voted to dissolve in 1957.

🏡 Display

Crate Labels are a reminder of a bygone era but the amazing lithography process is unparalleled even to this day in my opinion. Museums and Art Institutes have galleries dedicated to them and more and more collectors are seeking these out to preserve their history. Once the limited supply for sale is gone and on display with collectors or in galleries then they will be very difficult to acquire.

Imagine this amazing vintage advertising hanging as home decor in any room of your home instead of a museum! It's lovely in a kitchen or a Thanksgiving dining room, and a perfect gift for anybody from the Pine Barrens or anybody named Heather.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Antique 1920s American Beauty Eatmor Cranberries Barrel Label ✨ NY, NJ, CHI

Antique 1920s Sunrise Eatmor Cranberries Barrel Label ✨ NY, NJ, CHI

Antique 1920s Liberty Belle Eatmor Cranberries Barrel Label 🔔 NY, NJ, CHI

https://vintageantiquesgifts.com/products/antique-1920s-heather-eatmor-cranberries-barrel-label-new-jersey
