At about 8 1/2" x 6" it has the presence of a little poster, and honestly she's one of the prettiest faces in the cigar label world. She's museum company, too: the Cincinnati Art Museum keeps a Merchant's Queen cigar box label in its collection, a color lithograph with embossing of the same size, and dates it to the early 20th century.

She's a dark-eyed beauty with her curls pinned up under a comb, roses tucked in her hair and a white lace mantilla falling over her shoulders, looking back at you like somebody just called her name across the courtyard. Behind her the oval opens onto palm trees, blue mountains, a tobacco field with workers bent over the rows and a long white plantation house down the road - all of it framed in raised gold scrollwork and a garland of flowers. It's a fantasy of tropical luxury and hard work in one picture, and that was exactly the point.

✨ Gold, Stone and a Steel Die

Run a finger over the front and you can feel it. The lettering, the scrollwork, the flowers and her portrait are all pressed up into raised relief, and the gold is metallic, laid on in its own separate pass. Around 1900 the best cigar labels were made this way: chromolithography, where every color was drawn onto its own limestone and printed one pass at a time in perfect register, often ten colors or more to get the shading just right, then metallic bronzing powders for the gold, and finally an embossing die pressed into the finished sheet. It was slow and it was expensive, and by the late 1920s that rich, many-stone style of printing was already fading away. Flip the label over and the whole design shows through the back in mirror image from the die.

The printers' own records still exist, which tells you how seriously the trade took this work. The Rochester Institute of Technology holds forty-two books of progressive proofs - the color-by-color test pulls for cigar and package labels from 1890 to 1939 - made for Schmidt & Company, the American Lithographic Company and other big label houses of New York and San Francisco. And the Winterthur Museum in Delaware keeps the George Schlegel Lithographic Company's archive, close to ninety years of labels and cigar bands with the original art, the proofs and the lithographic stones themselves.

👑 A Queen for the Counter

Down at the bottom, in small type, the label reads TITLE & DESIGN REGISTERED. That's the brand owner staking a claim on both the name and the picture, so no rival could slap the same pretty face on their own box. There were thousands of cigar brands fighting for the same counter space back then, a lot of them dreamed up by small makers and jobbers, and a striking name with a beautiful face was how you got noticed.

And look at that name. Merchants Queen doesn't talk to the smoker so much as to the man behind the counter - the merchant - telling him this is the brand that will reign over his shelf. The salesmen who called on tobacco shops, the "drummers," carried sample books stuffed with label designs, and a shopkeeper picking a brand was really picking which piece of art would greet his customers every time they walked in the door.

🌴 Selling the Tropics

The palms, the mountains, the plantation house and the field hands weren't decoration. In this era a tropical scene was the trade's shorthand for good leaf - it said Cuba, warm sun and hand-tended tobacco before you read a single word, whether or not the cigars inside ever came near such a place. The lady in lace is a type rather than a portrait of anybody real, the idealized heroine label artists came back to again and again, and her setting tells you where the cigars wanted you to think they came from.

Most of the artists who drew these were commercial illustrators working behind the scenes. They rarely signed anything and were paid far less than the art was worth. Their names are lost, but their work still stops people more than a century later - and every time one of these gets framed and hung, that art gets saved from being forgotten. ❤️

📦 Why an Unused One Survived

Nearly every cigar label of this era met the same end: glued inside a wooden lid, smoked over, and thrown out with the empty box. A loose, unused sheet like this one is printer's stock that never met a box at all. Collectors tell it that a lot of the survivors came out of old printers' sample stocks and leftover runs from brands that folded, merged or never ordered enough to use up what was printed, and that warehouse and factory clean-outs in the 1970s and 1980s turned up stacks of them for the folks who knew what they were looking at. However this one made it, it's the art exactly the way the lithographer meant it to be seen.

These come from that original unused stock. They're clean and bright; some carry a soft whisper of age at an edge, the kind of subtle toning that disappears once you mat and frame it. In everyday display what you notice is the gold and the color, not the edge. Everything here is stored in the dark, under 40% relative humidity, at a steady 72°F, climate controlled.

🖼️ Where She Could Hang

Framed above a vintage bar cart or drinks cabinet 🍷

In a dressing room, bedroom or reading nook as a splash of old-world charm 💐

Anchoring a wall of cigar labels, tobacco tins and antique advertising in an office or den 🕰️

Floated in a shadow box where light from the side catches the embossing ✨

Details: original antique Merchants Queen cigar box inner label · 1900s chromolithograph with gold embossing · heavy paper stock · NOS from old stock.

There's only a finite supply of these left from the golden age of cigar label printing, and nobody's cutting stones and dies like this anymore - once these last ones are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire. 💛

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Antique 1900s Lucky Bill Gold Embossed Cigar Label 🎩 Large Victorian Boy Art

Vintage Mac Perfectos Cigar Box Label 🚬 1960s Scottish Man Tam O'Shanter Caricature Embossed Gold Litho Art

Antique Embossed Prudential Cigar Label 🚬 ~ Gold Detailing, 1900s-1920s
