Nothing on the pin or the bag names a maker, a license, or a date - it's a souvenir design in its own colors. This listing is for one sealed pin.

📅 What Actually Dates It

Nothing is printed on the piece itself, so the pin has to date itself by its own design. Early 737s - the -100 and -200 - carried slim engine pods hung directly under the wing; the shape here, a short, fat nacelle sitting forward of the wing, is the "hamster pouch" style that came in with the 737 Classic, launched in 1981 (the 737-300's first flight was February 24, 1984). So this reads as 1984 or later. The "MADE IN TAIWAN" bag gives a soft upper bound too: Taiwan's lapel-pin makers largely shifted their production to mainland China between 1991 and 1996, so the mid-1990s is a reasonable ceiling. Inside that window I've always called it a 1980s pin, from the years the 737 Classic was brand new.

🏭 Boeing, From a Boathouse to Renton

William E. Boeing left Yale in 1903 without a degree, made his money in lumber, and took flying lessons in 1915. He went down to Los Angeles late that summer to learn at Glenn L. Martin's flying school and bought one of Martin's planes, a Martin TA seaplane, and Martin's pilot Floyd Smith came up to Seattle to put it together in a tent hangar on Lake Union and keep teaching him. That fall it crashed into Lake Washington, and when Martin told him the replacement parts were months away, Bill figured he could build a better airplane himself - I've always liked that Boeing got its start with a man who was tired of waiting on parts. In the summer of 1916 he incorporated the Pacific Aero Products Company out of a converted boathouse on the Duwamish River near Seattle; the "B&W" seaplane, built with naval officer Conrad Westervelt, flew that June, and the company was renamed Boeing Airplane Company the next year. Federal antitrust action in 1934 forced Boeing out of the airline side of its business, splitting the holding company into three - Boeing Airplane Company, United Air Lines and United Aircraft; Bill Boeing sold his shares and stepped away for good. Boeing merged with McDonnell Douglas on August 1, 1997, and its headquarters left Seattle for Chicago in 2001 and later Arlington, Virginia.

🛫 The "Baby Boeing"

Preliminary design on the 737 began May 11, 1964, aimed at a fifty-to-sixty-seat jet for routes between fifty and a thousand miles - too short for the 707 or the 727 to serve well. Lufthansa signed on as launch customer on February 19, 1965, ordering 21 aircraft before the plane had even flown. It rolled out January 17, 1967, and made its first flight April 9, 1967, out of Boeing Field with test pilots Brien Wygle and Lew Wallick at the controls - which is also where the first 271 737s were actually built, before final assembly moved to Renton, Washington, in late 1970. Renton's plant itself dates to 1941, when it turned out B-29s and a single Sea Ranger flying boat for the war effort. Ground was broken that September on a marshy spot at the south end of Lake Washington, on land that only came up out of the water when the lake was lowered in 1916 - and sitting right on a big lake is exactly why the Navy wanted it for a flying-boat factory, with seaplane ramps running down into the water. Then the Sea Ranger order was cancelled to free the plant for B-29s, so only one was ever finished; it flew off Lake Washington on July 9, 1942, and earned the nickname the "Lone Ranger." The 737 was the best-selling airliner family in history until the Airbus A320 finally passed it, in orders in 2019 and in deliveries in 2025.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Vintage 1990s Captain Planet Logo Enamel Pin 🌍 NOS Sealed in Original Bag, Made in Taiwan

Vintage AuH2O Barry Goldwater Campaign Pin 🗳️ NOS Factory Sealed 1964 Lapel Pin

Vintage 1995 Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes Pin 🐰 for Superfans
