Made from carbonated filtered water, flavor, citric acid, cane sugar and caramel color. Quality Beverages Since 1916, Newport Bottling Works, Newport, N.H., one pint ten ounces. Never put on a bottle. Both of yours will look just like this one. Living in New Hampshire you hear my elders talk about Budd's with real nostalgia.

🫙 Golden, Not Dry

There are two kinds of ginger ale, and this is the old one. The golden style goes back to Thomas Cantrell, an Irish apothecary who was making ginger ale in Belfast in the 1850s - dark, sweet and strong on the ginger, the way Vernors still is. The pale "dry" kind came later, when John McLaughlin brought out his Pale Dry in Toronto in 1904 and patented it as Canada Dry in 1907; that's the one that took off as a mixer during Prohibition. The Newport Bottling Works made both. In 1926 Isaac Budnitz, doing business as the Works, registered the trade-mark for Dartmouth Dry ginger ale - and this Golden is the Budd house version of the old style, with the caramel color printed right on the label to give it that gold.

🏪 The Budnitz Family

The business started in 1916 as A. Budnitz & Son - that's the "Since 1916" - and the story goes it was a grocery for Newport's Polish community that never set out to make soda. In 1922, the way it's always been told, they got the chance to use the Newport Bottling Works, and through the 1920s the brand was Bud's Best. The Budd name came when Alexander's son Isaac Budnitz had the Sullivan County probate court change his name to Isaac Budd, sometime between 1931 and 1933. By the 1930s Budd's was famous all over Vermont and New Hampshire, and the doors closed for good in 1972.

🏭 Sunapee Street

Newport's own 1961 bicentennial history, written while the firm was still bottling, says the family got into soft drinks back in the horse-and-buggy days, with hand-powered machinery and a horse and wagon for deliveries. The works moved to Sunapee Street in 1929, put in modern syrup and bottling rooms there in 1938, and sold beer wholesale from the repeal of Prohibition on. They handled other people's drinks too: a Newport Bottling Works sales slip from the 1920s lists Clicquot ginger ale right beside Coca-Cola, Moxie and the house Dartmouth Dry, so this Golden had the big names on the same truck. And upstairs, the story goes, was a bowling alley to carry the business through the slow winter months - Newport's town reports from the mid-1930s show Isaac Budd paying for a bowling license.

Newport itself is the Sullivan County seat, a Sugar River mill town that had three woolen mills and two tanneries by 1859, and it's where Sarah Josepha Hale was born in 1788 - the woman who wrote "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and kept at it until Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863.

🔎 Dating It

A script Budd label with Newport Bottling Works along the bottom fits after Isaac's name change and before March 31, 1948, when the business incorporated as Budd's Beverages, Inc. - after that the very same design was printed with the new name at the foot. So it comes from the Newport Bottling Works years between the early '30s and 1948, and I put it in the 1930s, when the Budd name was new on the labels. And funny enough, no federal law made a soda bottler list ingredients back then - when the 1938 food and drug law's ingredient rule finally took hold in 1940, soda was excused from it, and stayed excused until 1962 - but Budd's printed them anyway.

Darling framed in a kitchen or by a home bar. This is a full antique. The supply is finite - Budd's closed in 1972, nobody's printing their ginger ale labels again, and once these last unused ones are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Antique 1930s-40s Budd Grape Soda Label Pair 🍇 Set of Two from Newport NH, The Taste Tells

Antique 1930s-40s Budd Lemon & Lime Soda Label Pair 🍋 Set of Two from Newport, NH, The Taste Tells

Antique 1930s-40s Budd Creamy Root Beer Label Pair 🍺 Set of Two, The Taste Tells, Newport NH Collectible

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/2718/4037/files/pair_e410d1be-5ef6-41b7-9fcd-b0e884f6d93c.jpg?v=1792965072
