Quality Beverages Since 1916, Newport Bottling Works, Newport, N.H., one pint ten ounces. Never used. Both of yours will look just like this one. Living in New Hampshire you hear my elders talk about Budd's with real nostalgia.

🥤 Their Own Cola

Here's a fun one: the Newport Bottling Works was handling Coca-Cola too - its own sales slip from the 1920s lists cases of Coca-Cola right alongside Moxie, Clicquot ginger ale and the house's own Dartmouth Dry. So Budd Kola was the hometown cola sitting on the same truck as the famous one. Coca-Cola's big success spawned hundreds of imitators, and this was Newport's homegrown answer. And the ingredient line on it is a little surprise: from 1940 soda bottlers didn't have to list ingredients at all, and weren't made to again until 1962, but Budd's printed them anyway.

🏪 The Budnitz Family

Newport is the Sullivan County seat and it was a real mill town - its Sibley Scythe Company even made the scythes that cleared jungle for the Panama Canal. Kenneth Andler, a Newport boy of about 1910 to 1920, wrote in the town's 1961 bicentennial book that its three textile mills and big shoe shop drew a considerable wave of immigrants, most of them Finnish and Polish, with a good many Greeks and French Canadians too.

The business started in 1916 as A. Budnitz & Son - a grocery for Newport's Polish immigrant community that never planned on soda - and in 1922 got the chance to use the Newport Bottling Works. That same 1961 book puts the business on Sullivan Street at first, in the horse-and-buggy days of soda, with hand-powered machinery and deliveries by horse and wagon. A 1924 ad for Bud's Best Beverages bragged about the Works' sunlit factory, sterilized bottles and pure materials, and welcomed visitors to the plant. In 1929 the Works moved to Sunapee Street, and in 1938 it added modern syrup and bottling rooms there, so this label comes from the Sunapee Street years; from the repeal of Prohibition on, they wholesaled beer too. Through the 1920s the brand was Bud's Best; the Budd name came when Alexander's son Isaac Budnitz had the Sullivan County probate court change his name to Isaac Budd, sometime between 1931 and 1933. Isaac had been one of the founding partners with his father, and in 1961, the company's 45th year in the beverage business, he was its President and Treasurer.

The house made its own Dartmouth Dry, Fruit Bowl and Old Sol, and Budd's had a bowling alley on the top floor to carry it through the slow winter months - Newport's town reports from the mid-1930s show Isaac Budd paying for a bowling license. By the 1930s Budd's was famous all over Vermont and New Hampshire, and the doors closed for good in 1972.

🔎 Dating It

A script Budd label with Newport Bottling Works at the foot fits after the name change and before March 31, 1948, when the business incorporated as Budd's Beverages, Inc. That's the Works years from the early '30s to 1948, and I put this one in the 1930s, when the Budd name was new on the labels.

🍾 Budd In The State Collection

The New Hampshire Historical Society keeps two Budd bottles: an embossed BUDDS BEST crown-top marked Newport Bottling Works, Newport, N.H., and a 1962 bottle Thatcher Glass made for Budd's Beverages Inc., with the champagne glass, SINCE 1916 and THE TASTE TELLS printed right on the glass. So the slogan on this label was still selling Budd's soda in Newport in 1962.

Darling framed in a kitchen or over a home bar. This is a full antique. The supply is finite - Budd's closed in 1972, nobody's printing their Kola labels again, and once these last unused ones are gone, they'll be very difficult to acquire.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Antique 1930s-40s Budd Creamy Root Beer Label Pair 🍺 Set of Two, The Taste Tells, Newport NH Collectible

Antique 1930s-40s Budd Lemon & Lime Soda Label Pair 🍋 Set of Two from Newport, NH, The Taste Tells

Antique 1930s Budd Golden Ginger Ale Label Pair 🍺 Set of Two, Newport NH Bottling Works

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0597/2718/4037/files/pair_d105003e-48dc-4eca-a700-d15c8bdd4aee.jpg?v=1792965188
