Recognizing this gap in the market, a group of New York City merchants banded together to create The Home Insurance Company. With a paid-in capital of $500,000 – a substantial sum for an insurance company at the time – they set out to provide much-needed coverage for property owners across the nation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA little stock-certificate history to go with it: the oldest surviving share certificate in the world is a Dutch East India Company certificate from 1606 (the company had been selling shares since 1602), found in a Dutch archive in 2010.
