A bare-chested fighter with his dark hair slicked back squares up with his gloves raised and a hard stare, in maroon trunks against a deep navy ground, and PUGGY is spelled out in big outlined block letters beside a boxing ring drawn in thin lines. Inside the drawn ring sits a plain yellow panel with nothing printed in it at all, and the back is blank, with the boxer and the lettering showing through.

🔲 Why the Panel Is Empty

This is what the trade calls a stock label. Lithographers made up ready-designed labels for packers who couldn't afford a custom design of their own, or only needed a few thousand, and the packer's name got overprinted into a blank space later. This one never got its name, so it carries no packer, no town and no fruit, which makes it a nice clean piece of pure art. The UC Davis Library keeps a Puggy label in its Lug and Can Label Collection, more than 4,000 lithographed labels from around 1890 to 1970, most of them from California's Central Valley, and it's cataloged with the packer, place and produce all listed as unknown.

🥊 Pug, as in Pugilist

"Pug" has been slang for a boxer since the middle of the 1800s, short for pugilist, one who fights with his fists, especially a professional prize fighter. Put a prize fighter on the label and call it Puggy, and the joke tells itself.

🖼️ Display

Crate Labels are a reminder of a bygone era but the amazing lithography process is unparalleled even to this day in my opinion. Museums and Art Institutes have galleries dedicated to them and more and more collectors are seeking these out to preserve their history. Once the limited supply for sale is gone and on display with collectors or in galleries then they will be very difficult to acquire.

Imagine this amazing vintage advertising hanging as home decor in any room of your home instead of a museum!
