The top vignette shows a four-funnel liner steaming past a harbor building, tugs and barges — and the same engraving, unchanged, appears on an IMM stock trust certificate dated December 1902, issued to and signed by J. Bruce Ismay himself, six years before Harland & Wolff was even authorized to start building the Olympic trio (Olympic, Titanic and Britannic) in 1908. Whoever that liner is, she was on IMM's paper years before Titanic was ever ordered, and the certificate never names her. The lower vignette is a classical woman seated with a pair of dividers and a set-square, a rigged ship's hull and anchor chain behind her, "AMERICAN BANK NOTE Co NEW YORK" lettered beneath.

📋 Registered, Cancelled, and Marked by J.P. Morgan's Own Bank

The certificate names the Central Trust Company of New York as registrar — on some sheets in this stack that line carries a dark overprinted band updating it to Central Union Trust Company of New York, the name the bank took after a 1918 merger, which is one of the ways a stack like this carries a range of years rather than one. A separate strip carries the Transfer Agent's countersignature. Every sheet here was actually issued and later cancelled: you'll get one of three cancellation styles — plain round punch holes, or a perforated "J.P.M. & CO." stamp through the top vignette, or that same perforation through the lower one. J.P.M. & CO. is J.P. Morgan & Co., IMM's own banker, which handled a good deal of the paperwork behind the company it had built.

🏦 J.P. Morgan's Shipping Trust

In the spring of 1902, J. Pierpont Morgan announced in London that he was consolidating the major transatlantic steamship lines into a single combine. International Mercantile Marine was incorporated in New Jersey on October 1, 1902, founded together with Clement Griscom (American Line and Red Star Line), Bernard N. Baker (Atlantic Transport Line), J. Bruce Ismay (White Star Line) and John Ellerman (Leyland Line), with the Dominion Line amalgamated in as well. White Star itself had been bought that April. Newspapers called the combine simply "the Shipping Trust." And it was New York money: J.P. Morgan & Co. bankrolled it from its banking house on the corner of Wall and Broad Streets. To me it's Morgan running the same play he'd already run on the railroads, where he reorganized so many lines the practice got its own name, "Morganization," and on steel, where he bought out Andrew Carnegie and put together U.S. Steel in 1901. Now it was the Atlantic's turn. The British press and public were incensed at seeing White Star sold off for American gold, and the worry ran deep enough that the British government subsidized Cunard's new Lusitania and Mauretania just to have something that could compete.

⚓ White Star, Titanic, and the Men Who Ran It

White Star was IMM's prize holding, and White Star owned Titanic; she was built at Harland & Wolff in Belfast under Lord Pirrie. When she sank on her maiden voyage the night of April 14 into 15, 1912, the American inquiry, led by Senator William Alden Smith, harshly criticized both IMM's principles and J.P. Morgan personally as the trust's architect. It had already been arranged before the sinking for J. Bruce Ismay to step down as IMM's president; he was succeeded by Harold Sanderson in 1913, the same year Morgan himself died, in March. Philip A. S. Franklin, IMM's vice president, was appointed receiver in April 1915 when the company's bond debts forced a "friendly" receivership, then became president himself in 1916, holding the role for twenty years. Clement Griscom's lines had also carried just over half of the Holland America Line, from 1902 to 1917.

🖋️ The Printer: American Bank Note Company

The engraving is the work of the American Bank Note Company, whose roots reach back to 1795 as Murray, Draper, Fairman & Company; its modern incorporation followed in 1858, in New York, and in 1879 it took in the National Bank Note Company and the Continental Bank Note Company along with the Post Office's stamp contract. By the early twentieth century it was the country's leading engraver of currency, postage stamps and corporate securities — the natural choice when a company as prominent as International Mercantile Marine needed its stock certificates cut in steel.

🌊 What Became of the Company

White Star was sold to Britain's Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1926 for a reported seven million pounds. IMM itself merged with the Roosevelt Steamship Company in 1931, absorbed the struggling United States Lines, and by the early 1940s had folded its old subsidiaries — Atlantic Transport in 1931, the American Line in 1932, Red Star sold off in 1934 — into that one successor, renamed United States Lines Inc. in 1943. The trust J.P. Morgan built to rule the Atlantic quietly became something else, one stock certificate at a time.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Antique 1910s - 1920s Titanic International Mercantile Marine Stock Certificate 📜 Brown White Star Line

Antique 1910s - 1920s Titanic International Mercantile Marine Preferred Stock Certificate 📜 Purple

Antique 1910s - 1920s Titanic International Mercantile Marine Stock Certificate 📜 10 Shares Preferred Gray

https://vintageantiquesgifts.com/products/own-piece-titanic-history-antique-1910s-stock-certificate-treasures
