The back panel carries a \"MAIL THIS TODAY!\" reply card asking for the bottler's name, address, city, zone, state, company and territory of interest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🥤 The company behind the pitch\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarq's traces back to 1890, when Edward Charles Edmond Barq and his older brother Gaston founded the Barq Brothers Bottling Co. in New Orleans's French Quarter. Edward moved to Biloxi in 1897 and opened the Biloxi Artesian Bottling Works the following year — the start of the root beer this brochure is selling franchises for. For decades the company avoided the words \"root beer\" outright, since a rival had staked a claim to the term, and it wasn't until 1935 that \"Drink Barq's. It's good\" appeared on patented bottles. The first franchise went to a firm in Mobile, Alabama in 1934, soon followed by New Orleans; by 1937 there were 62 bottling plants across 22 states, and by 1950 the franchise count had grown to about 200 — the same figure printed on this brochure's cover. That Safford and Saint Paul pair is worth pointing out: independent Coca-Cola and Pepsi bottlers ran Barq's territories right alongside their own brands, decades before Coca-Cola bought the company outright.
