In the 1970s, miniature replica beer cans like this one were a real craze in those coin-operated prize machines — the forbidden-fruit toy, a scale model of exactly the thing a kid wasn't allowed near, traded on the playground and carried around in pockets until the print wore off. This is one that made it through: a mustard-yellow miniature Coors can, "Coors" across the top in flowing black script, a small red banner beneath it, a black oval medallion picked out in silver with silvery scrollwork on either side, and along the bottom the old slogan the brand carried for years, "America's Fine Light Beer." Read up the side and you'll find another honest touch — "ALL ALUMINUM - RECYCLE," the same recycling note a real can carried, faithfully copied in miniature.

The silver end is the top: a pressed dome with a raised curved ridge like a ring-pull outline, running to a small open hole at the center. The black end is the base, a moulded disc with a small raised mark at its center; no maker's name or country is printed. Two clear vending-capsule halves come with it, the round bubble this style of prize dropped out of.

🥫 What the Recycling Line Is Actually About

That "ALL ALUMINUM - RECYCLE" note isn't just decoration — Coors made real history with it. In 1959, after years of research and roughly $10 million, Coors introduced the first two-piece recyclable aluminum beverage can, a 7-ounce Banquet can, and that same year it piloted the world's first aluminum-can buy-back, a penny a can, in Colorado. In 1970 the company relaunched the program nationwide as "Cash for Cans" across its marketing territory. This little can is copying the legend Coors was printing on its own cans right through that decade.

🏔️ Why Coors, of All Beers

A miniature of any beer would be a fun period piece. A miniature of Coors from the 1970s is something better, because Coors was one of the most talked-about beers in the country at the time, brewed in Golden, Colorado, and for most of the decade you simply couldn't buy it east of the Mississippi — the company wouldn't pasteurize, and the beer needed refrigerated shipping the whole way, so it stayed a strictly western brand. All the way to 1976, Coors sold in only eleven western states. People flying home from the West packed their suitcases with it, and a can carried back east was practically a trophy. That mystique is exactly what "Smokey and the Bandit" cashed in on in 1977 — the plot is Burt Reynolds running 400 cases of Coors from Texarkana, Texas, to Georgia in 28 hours, because you simply couldn't buy it there. It became the second-highest-grossing film of the year on that premise alone.

🔑 The Same Little Can, Other Lives

This exact design turns up in a few different forms out in the world — some fitted with a pull-tab loop, some strung on a cord through the same top hole as a novelty vending necklace, some set on a ring as a keychain. It also shows up as a cake-decorating topper: a sealed pack from Parrish's Cake Decorating Supplies, a company that traces back to 1931 when John Parrish started out selling from his car and that's still operating today in Gardena, California, packaged a couple of these Coors miniatures alongside tiny Budweiser, Schlitz and Pabst cans. Ours has neither a tab nor a cord — just the bare top hole — which is its own honest little variation on the same small idea.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Vintage 1970s Robin Hood Beer Label - Columbus 🍺 OH Memorabilia

Vintage 1970s-80s Sterling Beer Schnitzelbank Song Sheet 🍺 German Sing-Along on Weaved Paper

Vintage 1970s Dinosaur Rubber Vending Machine Stamps NOS Mini Figure Stamp Toy Prize Collectible Lot Token 🧸

https://vintageantiquesgifts.com/products/vintage-1970s-mini-coors-beer-vending-gumball-never-opened-treasures
