Here it's a wide-eyed clown girl with rosy cheeks and painted lashes, and tucked right up against her, a blue, pink-snouted, big-toothed little creature boxed inside a green oval - a gargoyle, or close enough to one, grinning out from a scatter of green and yellow triangles. Two small white balls sit loose at the left, waiting to be tilted down into their holes - a two-inch tilt-and-catch dexterity puzzle under a clear dome, plain black on the back.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe card above it: white script \"Plastic Toys,\" small block capitals \"NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CHILDREN UNDER 3 YEARS OF AGE,\" and \"MADE IN HONG KONG\" along the bottom. No maker printed anywhere - and the same wording, the same blank white disc in the corner, turns up in yellow on a completely different toy, a bagged helicopter. \"Plastic Toys\" was a stock header an export house reused, not a brand of its own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🏭 Where the Card Comes From\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMADE IN HONG KONG means something real here. After 1949, refugees and entrepreneurs from the mainland flooded into the colony and built a plastics industry practically overnight - eight registered factories running by 1950, among them Kader, Tai Nam, Cheung Kong and Winsome. Lam Leung-tim, who'd cut his teeth running a plastics and bakelite works in Guangzhou, founded Forward Products in Hong Kong in 1955 and merged it with Winsome Plastic Works in 1960 to build Forward Winsome Industries. No factory name made it onto this card, just the country of origin, but it came out of that same fast-growing industry - one of thousands of cheap, bright little novelties Hong Kong shipped out by the million. And a whole lot of those millions were headed for America. Once the 1960s were out, the United States was the main market for Hong Kong's plastic goods - toys most of all - and in 1972 Hong Kong passed Japan to become the biggest toy exporter in the world. Twenty years later we were still Hong Kong's largest toy customer, taking about 30 percent of its toy exports, which is how a little red-carded puzzle like this one ends up on this side of the Pacific.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🎭 Clown and Creature, Side by Side\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePutting a friendly clown face next to a fanged little monster on the same toy wasn't unusual - carnival and sideshow art always lived comfortably together, and a dime-store novelty rack didn't draw a hard line between cute and creepy. Neither figure carries a studio name or a license line; both are drawn in the same bold, flat, made-to-be-seen-from-three-feet-away style that Hong Kong's export artists turned out by the thousand.
