It was added to the ancient Olympic Games in 708 BC as part of the pentathlon. In the modern Games, the men's event has been on the modern Olympic program since 1908, the last of today's four throws to join after the shot put, discus and hammer, and the women's javelin came in 1932, the second women's throw after the discus in 1928, when America's Babe Didrikson won the first gold.

🌾 Delta asparagus

"Delta Grown" means the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, and for about a century that was asparagus country. The first commercial crop there was grown on Bouldin Island in 1892 by Chinese farmers, and in 1900 the Hickmott Cannery sent the first canned asparagus back East. Acreage grew three and a half times between 1918 and 1930. In 1919 Thomas Foon Chew moved his Bayside Cannery to Isleton and built new machinery for handling and canning asparagus, and they called him the "Asparagus King."

It took a lot of hands. The workers were Chinese, then Japanese, then Filipino after 1898, and by 1930 there were more than 350 asparagus camps in the Delta with about 7,000 harvest workers, 5,500 of them Filipino. By the mid-1980s the local crop had declined, as growers in Peru and Mexico undercut it.

🚜 Pacific Earth Resources

The family behind Pacific Earth Resources was Richard and Beth Rogers, the owners of Pacific Sod, and the farming roots run back through Beth's side. Her grandfather was a pioneer farmer, rancher and oilman who started the family farming in Southern California in 1886. In 1951 Beth's father bought 8,000 acres on the Oxnard plain at Camarillo from the American Crystal Sugar Company, and the family farmed sugar beets, then lima beans and other row crops. In 1968 they set aside 100 acres for turfgrass, and that became Pacific Sod, the Rogers family's sod farm.

The label actually dates itself. That little ™ after JAVELIN matters: Pacific Earth Resources filed the JAVELIN trademark for fresh asparagus on February 1, 1994, gave its first use as March 3, 1994, and got it registered on July 11, 1995. A label still carrying the ™ instead of the ® was printed in between, so this one comes from about 1994 or 1995. By then Pacific Sod was the largest division of Pacific Earth Resources, and acquisitions in 1982 and 1988 had doubled the size of the company.

Those two buys have a good story behind them, and I love it. Back in 1978 Pacific Sod ranked No. 3 among California sod growers, right behind Cal-Turf and Nunes Turfgrass, and its general manager told a trade magazine that "when you're No. 3, you try twice as hard." He wasn't kidding. In 1982 the company, going by Pacific Green Sod at the time, bought Nunes Turfgrass, and in 1988 it bought Cal-Turf, which had been growing sod in California since 1958. They ended up owning both of the outfits that used to be ahead of them.

🏡 Display

It's a big, bright square that looks great framed in a kitchen, and it's a perfect gift for a track and field fan, a javelin thrower, or anybody who actually likes asparagus.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Antique 1930s Our Pick Crate Label 🐓 — Loomis Fruit Growers Association, Loomis California, Rooster Art

Antique 1930s San Marcos Brand Sunkist Lemon Crate Label 🍋 Goleta Lemon Association, Santa Barbara County California

Vintage 1940s Channel Lemons Crate Label Goleta California Citrus Art NOS 🍋
