AND CLEVELAND, OHIO. The depositary, registrar and transfer agent was The Shareholder Services Group, a division of American Express Information Services in Boston, and the back carries the printed assignment form and an Application for Transfer under Section 270 of the New York tax law.

⛽ Sunoco's industrial side

Sun Company - the Sunoco gas station people - bought an industrial distributing business in 1975 to steady its oil earnings. When Sun decided to sell its non-energy businesses in 1986, Shearson Lehman Brothers and the subsidiary's own executives bought it for $199 million that October, and in January 1987 they turned it into a master limited partnership based at One Logan Square in Philadelphia, selling electrical supplies, fluid power equipment, glass and maintenance products.

Each public unit was a Class A interest and a Class B interest together; about 40,000 units stayed with management and more than ten million went to the public. The two classes traded separately on the New York Stock Exchange, Class A as SDP and this Class B as SDPB. Class A holders got a priority return of $1.10 a year; Class B holders got distributions to cover their share of the taxable income.

🔩 The Hillman connection

Here's the part I like. Sun Distributors had bought The Hillman Group in 1982 - the keys, screws and hooks in the little drawers at every hardware store. The partnership renamed itself SunSource in 1996, and that December announced it would convert into a regular corporation, SunSource Inc.; at the conversion in 1997 each Class B interest like this one became a quarter share of SunSource stock. After Allied Capital bought a majority stake, SunSource changed its name in March 2002 to The Hillman Companies - today's Hillman Solutions. So this receipt is a direct ancestor of the company in your hardware store's fastener aisle.

📅 How old are they?

A Class B receipt in the name Sun Distributors L.P. belongs between the 1987 partnership and the 1996 SunSource name, and I've always had them as 1990s. These come from a stack, so the one you get will carry its own date, owner, number and transfer stamps, and may look a little different from my pictures.

📜 About these certificates

The American Bank Note Company that engraved it was formed in 1858 and printed money for more than a hundred countries. These are 12 by 8 inches, engraved on heavy certificate paper. It's a great one for anybody from Sunoco, SunSource or Hillman, a finance office, or a collection of 1980s Wall Street deal paper. The supply is finite - Sun Distributors L.P. was gone by 1997, nobody's issuing these again, and once these last ones are framed, they'll be very difficult to acquire.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Vintage 1990s Sun Distributors Stock Certificate 📜 Class A Started by Sunoco, Philadelphia Industrial Supply

Vintage 1990s Sun Distributors Stock Certificates 📜 Combo A and B Sunoco Industrial Distributor Scripophily

Antique 1930s 1950s Boston and Albany Railroad Stock Certificate 📜 Engraved Share American Bank Note Historic Wall Art

https://vintageantiquesgifts.com/products/vintage-1990s-sun-distributors-stock-certificate-class-b-sunoco-american-bank-note
