The card's red banner reads SPECIAL POLICE BADGE in white letters, and under it a cartoon motorcycle cop leans into his handlebars — white cap, big goggles, one gloved hand on the grip, a city skyline sketched in behind him. Down in the corner, small, it says JAPAN. That's where these were printed in tin for the American dime-store trade. Pinned to the card is a red-and-blue deputy sheriff star for Alamo, Texas. It's a toy, made for a kid's shirt pocket, and a good one. They seldom turn up for sale, carded or loose.

🌵 Alamo, Texas

Alamo is a real town, down in Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley, a few miles southeast of McAllen. Around 1902 to 1909, Peter Ebenezer Blalock and George T. Hawkins put the land together and laid out a townsite with shipping pens, naming the depot "Ebenezer." In 1909 the Alamo Land and Sugar Company bought the site and moved it to higher ground, and the Alamo Townsite Company, run by C. H. Swallow and Rentfro Creager, promoted it from there. It went through the names Forum and Swallow before it settled on Alamo — and the story goes it was named, in the end, for the old mission up in San Antonio - the Alamo, where the Texian defenders held out for thirteen days in 1836 - the one that gives this little badge's star its punch. Alamo incorporated in 1924, had about 200 people the next year, passed 3,000 by 1950, and was pushing 15,000 by 2000. For much of that stretch it was a shipping point for citrus and vegetables out of the Valley.

A sheriff is a county job, so a real deputy sheriff working out of Alamo would have carried a Hidalgo County badge, not a city one. This little star is doing what dime-store badges did best — borrowing a Texas name a kid already knew, long before he ever asked which county it sat in.

⭐ The Star on the Badge

The badge is a black six-point star on a red field with a blue rim, its points ball-tipped and its whole outline traced in a fine chain-link border. A gold ribbon crosses the top reading DEPUTY, with SHERIFF banked underneath it. Right at the center sits a round seal, STATE OF TEXAS in white letters on blue, with a single star set inside an olive-and-live-oak wreath. Two more gold ribbons carry the bottom points: ALAMO over TEX.

🗓️ When These Were Made

Nothing on the card gives a year, but the rest of the family does. The same yellow card comes with a New York badge copying the NYPD patch adopted in July 1971 and a San Francisco badge copying the patch the SFPD added around 1970 — so this whole run was on the racks in the 1970s. There's no maker or importer printed anywhere on it, just JAPAN.

⭐ When Kids Really Did Get Badges from the Law

The mid-century American childhood this badge comes from was full of real badges given by real officers. Junior deputy programs let sheriffs swear in schoolkids as honorary deputies; school safety patrol programs, organized since the 1920s, put badges and belts on millions of children; police departments handed out badges at parades, fairs, and classroom visits as a matter of civic routine. An Alamo, Texas deputy sheriff star was the dime-store cousin of all that — the badge a kid could buy with pocket change. Sheriffs gave tin badges just like this one out as prizes in their youth programs, too. That documented world of junior programs is the backdrop this little survivor belongs to.

🔎 More From The Vintage & Antique Gifts Archive

Vintage 1960s-1970s Plorham Park NJ Police 🚔 Tin Litho Special Police Toy Badge Pin Error Misprint New Old Stock Made in Japan

Vintage 1960s-1970s Wyoming Highway Patrol 🦬 Special Police Tin Litho Toy Badge New Old Stock Original Card Made in Japan

Vintage 1960s-1970s San Francisco Special Police Toy Badge Tin Litho Button Pin New Old Stock Japan Original Card Collectible 🚔

https://vintageantiquesgifts.com/products/vintage-alamo-texas-deputy-sheriff-tin-litho-toy-badge-japan
