They vary a little one to the next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🚔 Special Police, Borrowed Seal and All\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a little tin litho pinback still riding on its original yellow card and sealed in its sleeve, under a red banner that reads SPECIAL POLICE BADGE. The card art is a cartoon motorcycle officer: white peaked cap, big goggles over his eyes, gloved hands on the handlebars, a city skyline drawn in behind him. The button pinned beside him has a red rim around a black shield face. POLICE runs big across the top, DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE arcs above the seal in the middle, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs below it. JAPAN is printed small in the corner of the card, which is where these were tin lithographed before they crossed the ocean to sit on an American dime-store rack. And they're rare - carded or loose, a Department of Defense one just doesn't come up for sale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🦅 The Seal It Borrowed\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat center image is the real Department of Defense seal, and it's drawn with the actual pieces: an eagle with its wings spread, a shield of thirteen pieces on its chest, three arrows in its talons, a wreath of laurel and olive underneath, and an arc of thirteen stars throwing rays above its head. The seal itself was authorized on August 22, 1949, by Defense Secretary Louis Johnson, the same order that renamed the old National Military Establishment the Department of Defense. Whoever made this toy took that seal and printed POLICE across the top of it. The Pentagon itself didn't get a police force of its own until 1987, when the Defense Protective Service was stood up - it became the U.S. Pentagon Police in 2002 - so this little badge was wearing POLICE over that seal a good decade before the Pentagon had police of its own. I like that about it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🗓️ When These Were Made\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing on the card spells out a year, but the family it belongs to does the telling. The same card design shows up carrying a New York button copying the NYPD patch adopted in July 1971, and a San Francisco button copying the patch the SFPD added around 1970. Put those side by side and this whole run of cards was on the racks in the 1970s. The button itself runs about an inch and a half across; the card is 4 by 2.25 inches. There's no maker or importer printed anywhere on it, just JAPAN in small letters in the corner — that's all it ever gave up about where it came from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003e🚔 The Real Junior Programs Behind Badges Like This\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDime-store tin badges did not live in a vacuum. Across mid-century America, real law enforcement agencies ran junior deputy and junior police programs: sheriffs swore in wide-eyed honorary junior deputies at county fairs and school assemblies, police departments sponsored school safety patrols — a movement that began in the 1920s and put belts and badges on millions of schoolchildren — and an officer handing a kid a badge at a parade or classroom visit was a familiar piece of civic life. Sheriffs gave tin badges just like this one out as prizes in their youth programs, too. A Department of Defense Special Police badge in a child's hand belonged to that same world, the era when a badge from a trusted grown-up could make a kid stand a little straighter.
