Three inches of grey cast metal, and it doesn't look like anything else on my shelves. A fluted, rounded bowl sits on two collar rings, then a baluster stem swells out, a broad flared disc spreads partway down, a ringed neck narrows again, and it all lands on a stepped round foot. It's a lovely little run of shapes, and I've turned it over more than once trying to place it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere's the part that makes me think it was made for something specific, not just decoration: it comes apart. The bowl lifts clean off a tapered post with a slotted top, the two halves sitting separately in a couple of these photos so you can see exactly how it fits back together. That's not how you build a knick-knack. Something used to sit on that post, or slot into that bowl, and I have no idea what.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the underside of the foot, MADE IN ENGLAND is raised in an arc, with a small domed centre and a six-digit number cast across from it. No maker's name anywhere on it, and nothing tells you what it's cast from.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI don't have a name for it. If you've come across this before and know what it belonged to, I'd love to hear it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🌸 A Stem Named for a Flower\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat swelling in the middle of the stem has a name older than any explanation I can give you for the rest of it: a baluster. It comes through French balustre from the Italian balaustra, the half-open flower of the pomegranate, whose bulging shape the stem echoes. The same profile turns up in staircase rails, candlesticks and the legs of furniture - here it's been shrunk down to fit a piece you can hold in one hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🏷️ Made in England\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThose two raised words on the base carry more history than you'd guess. Britain's Merchandise Marks Act of 1887 forced foreign goods to be labelled with their country of origin, \"Made in Germany\" chief among them, meant as a warning to British shoppers after cheap imports had been turning up stamped with well-known British names. It backfired - German manufacturers wore the label as a badge of quality until it became the very thing that sold the goods.
