They vary a little one to the next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🚔 What You've Got Here\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a New Old Stock tin litho pinback button, still pinned to its original card and sealed in its poly sleeve, never opened, exactly as it sat on the dime-store rack. The card is yellow with a red banner across the top reading SPECIAL POLICE BADGE, and under it a cartoon motorcycle cop leans over his handlebars — white peaked cap, big round goggles, one gloved hand steady on the bars, a city skyline sketched in behind him. Down in the corner, small, it just says JAPAN. That's where these were made and printed, for the American dime-store trade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe button itself is about an inch and a half across, yellow rim, green ring, with a white band running around it. HERB COOPER arches across the top of that band in red, SPECIAL SECURITY across the bottom. In the green center a bird rises with its wings thrown wide — gold feathers etched over white, eagle or phoenix, take your pick — its tail feathers fanned out at the base like a little crown, and PATROL banked in bold red letters right across its middle. Red, white, green, gold, and that dime-store yellow: five colors laid down clean and bright, the way the good tin litho work always was.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🦅 Herb Cooper, Special Security Patrol\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere's what makes this one different from the rest of the family. Most of the badges on this card style borrow a real police department's patch — a city you'd recognize on the button, a real force behind the name. This one doesn't. It names a security patrol instead: HERB COOPER SPECIAL SECURITY PATROL, spelled straight out in red around the rim, with PATROL banked across the bird in the middle. A special security patrol with a man's name on it reads like a private outfit rather than a police force. The button doesn't say what town or state it worked out of — just the name and the bird, nothing more. It's the odd one out on this card, and that's exactly why I like it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🗓️ When These Were Made\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's no date printed anywhere on the card, but the rest of the family gives it away. The same card design carries a New York button copying the NYPD patch adopted July 1, 1971, and a San Francisco button copying the SFPD patch added around 1970. That puts the whole card family, this one included, on the dime-store racks in the 1970s.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003e🚔 The Real Junior Programs Behind Badges Like This\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDime-store tin badges did not live in a vacuum. Across mid-century America, real law enforcement agencies ran junior deputy and junior police programs: sheriffs swore in wide-eyed honorary junior deputies at county fairs and school assemblies, police departments sponsored school safety patrols — a movement that began in the 1920s and put belts and badges on millions of schoolchildren — and an officer handing a kid a badge at a parade or classroom visit was a familiar piece of civic life. Sheriffs gave tin badges just like this one out as prizes in their youth programs, too. A Special Security Patrol badge in a child's hand belonged to that same world, the era when a badge from a trusted grown-up could make a kid stand a little straighter.
