The top half is a warm sepia portrait panel: \u003cstrong\u003eSteve Reeves\u003c\/strong\u003e, bearded and broad-shouldered, standing between a blonde in a pale ball gown and a dark-haired woman in a jewelled collar, his name running in white letters at the top right. The bottom half switches to loose, energetic brushwork – a whole line of Cossack cavalry at the gallop, sabres raised, led by a rider on a rearing white horse. Between the two, in bold black type, runs the French title \u003cstrong\u003eLES COSAQUES PASSENT A L'ATTAQUE\u003c\/strong\u003e (\"The Cossacks Attack\"), with \u003cstrong\u003e(LA CHARGE DES COSAQUES)\u003c\/strong\u003e set just beneath it, and the Flemish title \u003cstrong\u003eDE KOZAKKEN VALLEN AAN\u003c\/strong\u003e printed in red along the bottom. Freda\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the printer's line, \u003cstrong\u003eImprimé en Belgique\u003c\/strong\u003e, from Edicolor of Brussels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🎬 The Film: The White Warrior, 1959\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the Belgian release poster for \u003cem\u003eAgi Murad il diavolo bianco\u003c\/em\u003e, sold internationally as \u003cem\u003eThe White Warrior\u003c\/em\u003e – a 1959 adventure directed by \u003cstrong\u003eRiccardo Freda\u003c\/strong\u003e and loosely based on Leo Tolstoy's late novel \u003cem\u003eHadji Murat\u003c\/em\u003e. Steve Reeves was Mr. Universe in 1950 before he was ever an actor, and by 1959 his \u003cem\u003eHercules\u003c\/em\u003e had made him the biggest new name in European adventure pictures; here he plays the title role, a 19th-century Chechen chieftain leading his people against the Tsar's armies. Giorgia Moll and Renato Baldini round out the leads – the \"G. Moll\" and \"R. Baldini\" of the credit line – alongside Scilla Gabel and Milivoje Zivanovic. It was an Italy–Yugoslavia co-production, distributed abroad by Warner Bros. and at home by Lux Film, and it did solid business in Italy (483 million lire at the box office) on the strength of Reeves's name. Behind the camera, a year before he directed \u003cem\u003eBlack Sunday\u003c\/em\u003e, was a young \u003cstrong\u003eMario Bava\u003c\/strong\u003e, working here as cinematographer – and in the roughest stretches of the final showdown, Reeves had a stunt double, Alan Steel, doing the work for him. The film's real subject is the Caucasus highlanders, not the Cossacks – the Cossacks were the Tsar's own cavalry – but the Belgian distributor went with the more cinematic title, and the painted charge on this sheet delivers exactly what it promises.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🌍 Why a Belgian Poster\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBelgium is the only country in the world to use posters of this size, and they were very flamboyant compared to their counterparts across the globe. Due to their desirable size, graphics, and limited availability, these are a favorite among collectors. This sheet also carries both of its titles side by side – French and Flemish – which is a habit particular to Belgium and part of what makes an affiche its own thing to chase.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e📜 Where It Comes From\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis one comes from the archive of the now-defunct Cosmopolis Films, kept together as one collection since 2007. Cosmopolis was a Brussels distributor, based at 4 rue des Palais, and it turns up in the film trade press through the 1950s and into the 1960s; Belgium's own censorship records track it releasing films from December 1947 to October 1987 – the better part of forty years, running everything from postwar Italian and French drama through the peplum and spaghetti-western booms that followed. Cinema posters were never retail goods, either – they were trade material, hung in a lobby for a week or two and thrown away once the next booking arrived – so a distributor's own stock, held back rather than circulated, is about the only reason a clean, unused sheet like this survives at all.
