It's a tin litho pinback button, about an inch and a half across, a navy shield outlined in orange reading ROYAL OAK across the top, AUXILIARY just under it, and POLICE curving along the bottom, all in warm orange on that dark blue field. It's still pinned to its yellow card and sealed in its sleeve, the way it hung on a dime-store rack. It's a toy, made for kids, and a good one. And they're rare - carded or loose, a Royal Oak one just doesn't come up for sale.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe card is half the show. A cartoon motorcycle cop fills the left side: white peaked cap, big motorcycle goggles, gloved hands on the handlebars, a city skyline sketched in behind him, all under a red banner reading SPECIAL POLICE BADGE. Down in the corner it says JAPAN, small. That's where these were made, tin lithographed for the American dime-store trade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🦌 What the Little Shield Actually Shows\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDead center on the button sits a small round medallion carrying a miniature of Michigan's state coat of arms: an eagle perched at the top, two antlered animals standing on their hind legs holding a plain shield between them, and a curved band underneath too small to carry any lettering. Michigan's real arms give those two supporters different animals, an elk on one side and a moose on the other, but at this size the button's artist drew them as a matching pair. Still a faithful little stab at a big state emblem, shrunk down to fit a button a kid could pin to his shirt.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🏛️ Royal Oak, Michigan\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRoyal Oak is a Detroit suburb up in Oakland County that grew up along Woodward Avenue, the same road the Woodward Dream Cruise rolls down every year, and it's home to much of the Detroit Zoo. The name goes back to 1819, when Territorial Governor Lewis Cass was out surveying the area and a big oak tree reminded him of the Royal Oak back in England, the tree Charles II hid in after he lost the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Royal Oak became a village in 1891 and a city in 1921. Here's the part I like: that's the same Lewis Cass who designed Michigan's state coat of arms, the very seal sitting on this badge, adopted in 1835 and patterned after the old Hudson's Bay Company seal, eagle for the United States, elk and moose for Michigan, with mottos too small to read on a button this size, including Tuebor, \"I will defend.\" One man named this town and drew this seal. Not something the badge can take credit for, but a nice thing to know while you're holding it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRoyal Oak's real police department is older than the city itself. Philip H. Beauvais organized it in 1918, three years before incorporation, while also serving as village manager. Lloyd R. McClintock took over as chief in 1926 at just 24, believed to be the youngest police chief in the country at the time, and Ray C. Hayward held the job for 27 years, from 1936 to 1963. The Auxiliary Police named on this badge are a real, still-active volunteer arm of the department, turning out for special events, crime prevention, and checking on neighbors' houses while folks are away, described as the eyes and ears of the department.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🗓️ When These Were Made\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere's no date printed anywhere on this card, but the rest of the family gives it away. The same yellow card carries a New York City button copying the NYPD patch adopted in July 1971 and a San Francisco button copying the patch the SFPD added around 1970, which puts these on the racks in the 1970s. No maker or importer is printed on the card, just JAPAN, small, in the corner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003e🚔 Badges Like This and the Kids Who Wore Them\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBadges like this one didn't just sit on a store rack. Sheriffs handed out tin badges just like it as prizes in their own youth programs. Police departments backed school safety patrols from the 1920s on, putting real belts and badges on real schoolchildren posted at the crosswalk.
