That size, the graphics, and how few of them survive are exactly why collectors go after these. This one is the Belgian release poster for \u003cstrong\u003eTire Django Tire!\u003c\/strong\u003e — \u003cem\u003eSchiet Django Schiet!\u003c\/em\u003e in Flemish — the 1968 spaghetti western that played everywhere else as \u003cem\u003eShoot, Gringo... Shoot!\u003c\/em\u003e (\u003cem\u003eSpara, gringo, spara\u003c\/em\u003e in Italy). Up in the corner, the credit reads \u003cstrong\u003ecosmopolis-film\u003c\/strong\u003e — the Brussels distributor that put this sheet out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🔫 What's Printed on the Sheet\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe artwork is a painted close-up: a stubbled gunman under a battered, wide-brimmed hat, teeth bared, a revolver thrust up out of the corner and pointed almost straight at you, all done in warm, dusty earth tones. \u003cstrong\u003eTIRE DJANGO TIRE !\u003c\/strong\u003e runs across the top in red; \u003cstrong\u003eSCHIET DJANGO SCHIET !\u003c\/strong\u003e runs again along the bottom in grey Flemish — that dual French-and-Dutch billing on one sheet is the signature of a Belgian release poster, printed for a country that watches its films in both languages. Underneath, the billing reads \u003cstrong\u003eBRIAN KELLY · FABRIZIO MORONI · KEENAN WYNN\u003c\/strong\u003e, with the director credited as \u003cstrong\u003eRÉGIE: FRANK B. CORLISH\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the process line printed as \u003cstrong\u003eEASTMANCOLOR · CEMOSCOPE\u003c\/strong\u003e — yes, \"Cemoscope,\" that's how the sheet spells it, and I'm not about to correct a fifty-some-year-old printing plate. Down the left margin, in small vertical type, runs the printer's own imprint: Imp. Wagram, Brussels — the print house that actually ran this sheet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🎬 No Django in This Film\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere's the best part of this one. The director credited on the sheet as \"Frank B. Corlish\" was really Bruno Corbucci — the younger brother of Sergio Corbucci, the man who directed the actual Django in 1966. This film has no Django in it at all; its hero is a gunman named Stark. The Belgian distributor just hung his brother's famous name across the top to sell tickets, the way distributors all over Europe did with that title in the late '60s. It was Bruno's first western, and the story it tells has nothing to do with the one his brother made two years earlier — just the name borrowed off the marquee.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🎥 The Picture Itself\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe plot: an American is sentenced to death and saved at the last minute by a Mexican rancher, on one condition — bring back the rancher's son from the outlaw gang he's fallen in with. Only Stark eventually learns the rancher doesn't want his boy rescued so much as gotten rid of for good, since the son is illegitimate. Brian Kelly, top-billed here, is better known to a lot of people as the dad on TV's \u003cem\u003eFlipper\u003c\/em\u003e; Keenan Wynn, third-billed, was one of Hollywood's steadiest character actors for decades. Fabrizio Moroni rounds out the billing on this sheet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003e🗄️ From the Cosmopolis Films Archive\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis poster comes from the archive of the now-defunct Cosmopolis Films, kept together as one collection since 2007. Cosmopolis was a real Brussels distributor, trading out of 4 rue des Palais for roughly forty years, 1947 to 1987. These affiches were never sold to the public — they were trade stock, sent round to cinemas to advertise a film's run and then thrown away once the next picture arrived. What's here is what didn't get thrown away: unused stock that sat in the distributor's own archive instead of going up on a cinema wall, which is why a sheet this old can reach you never hung and still bright.
