San Fernando Valley Lemon Association was an American Icon. This gorgeous collectible memorabilia is based on the famous book Ramona by Helen Hunt Jackson, published in 1884. This association was pretty innovative and survived through some tough times. It's ironic that the innovation of the Los Angeles aqueduct, completed in 1913, was actually their start and finish. As it allowed agriculture in the area, but this soon dwindled away as more and more people flocked to the Valley. They did some really neat things like in 1936, they painted everything in their new building all bright colors like orange and violet, including all the machines and conveyor belts, etc. I can think of an Internet company that would be proud of this. The employees said it improved morale and helped keep them awake.

While other companies were going out of business left and right in the 1940s and 1950s, they stayed profitable by doing some ingenious moves like contracting with Hollywood to film movies at their properties, which brought thousands of eager applicants looking to pick fruit and pack it for cheap wages just in the hopes they would get discovered by Hollywood. Somewhere in the early 1960s, they couldn't hold off the expansion of man and were forced to close their orange and violet painted doors forever. One of the best sites I found for more history was thisone which tells more about this Extinct American Icon
