Hires Root Beer, an American brand manufactured by Keurig Dr Pepper, holds significant historical value. Introduced in 1876, it became one of the longest continuously made soft drinks in the United States. As of 2023, the Keurig Dr. Pepper website no longer lists Hires among its brands on the all-products listing search, marking the end of an era.

Charles Elmer Hires, a pharmacist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, created the beverage. The official story is that Hires first tasted root beer, a traditional American beverage dating back to the colonial era, while on his honeymoon in 1875. However, historical accounts vary, and the actual time and place of the discovery may never be known. By 1876, Hires had developed his recipe and marketed 25-cent packets of powder that yielded one US gallon (3.8 L) of root beer. At Philadelphia’s Centennial Exposition in 1876, he gave away free glasses of it to cultivate new customers. Hires marketed it as a solid concentrate made from 16 wild roots and berries, claiming it purified the blood and made rosy cheeks. In 1884, he began producing a liquid extract and syrup for soda fountains, shipping root beer in kegs, and using a unique fountain dispenser called the “Hires Automatic Munimaker.” The name “beer” caused issues with the temperance movement, but Hires promoted it as “The Temperance Drink” and “the Greatest Health-Giving Beverage in the World.
