With their provocative name, these tin lids from the Victorian Era are rare and carry significant historical weight. I have very few of these items which are likely never to be seen again and are in very few museums or collections.
Most complexion creams and this company's other products were well known for containing high amounts of Mercury, which did as described, but Mercury is notoriously toxic and can pass through both a cell’s membrane and the blood-brain barrier.
The phrase' mad as a hatter' has a fascinating origin. It was coined due to the hat-making industry's prevalence of 'mad hatter’s disease.' Hatmakers used a form of mercury to cure felt, and the inhalation of mercury vapors over time led to mercury poisoning. This disease was so common that by 1837, the phrase 'mad as a hatter' became a part of everyday language. Wearing makeup with high levels of mercury caused precisely the same sort of problems.
