before me, and my kids do it with me now — three generations of one family doing the same
thing. What is here is mine, though: my own archive, my photographs, my research, and every one of

Described from the object. Printed wording, maker's marks, dates and stamps are
read off the piece and quoted as they appear.

Condition stated plainly. Wear, foxing, tape, fading, a trimmed edge — if
it is there, it is in the description and it is in the photographs. I would rather you know first.

Unknowns stay unknown. When a mark is not legible or a date cannot be confirmed,

How it is kept
Everything is stored in the dark, under 40% relative humidity, at a steady 72°F, climate
controlled. Whatever ageing a piece carries happened long before it reached me — a hundred years
in a warehouse, a shop drawer, an attic. None of it has moved since. Paper does not keep deteriorating
on my watch, and what arrives will be exactly what the description and the photographs show.
That matters more than it sounds. The usual worry with old paper is that a flaw you were told about
turns out to be worse in hand, or that it will keep getting worse once you own it. Neither happens
here.
How I date and identify a piece
Most of what I carry is new old stock — store inventory that was set aside and never sold, so
it survives unused. Dating comes from the object: a printed copyright line, a patent date, a
manufacturer's mark, the printing method, the address a company used in a particular decade.
Where I hold a quantity of the same item, the listing gives a date range rather than a single year,
because the piece that reaches you may not be the exact sheet in the photograph. Where something is a
single dated instrument, it carries its own year. That distinction matters, and I keep it.
Why it matters
History is fragile. Not the history in textbooks — the small, overlooked history that lives
in a fruit crate label, a pharmacy poison bottle, a tobacco plug tag, a railroad bond, a tin police
badge from a dime store. If nobody keeps it, it is gone. What I sell is a piece of that, kept intact
and passed along with its story attached.
