Remember Universal Studios in 2006? 🕷️ 2006 Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure Attraction Stickers

These are round souvenir stickers from the Universal parks in Orlando, each one for a different ride, still on their white backing and never stuck. Every one carries its own 2006 copyright line. Pick your favorite, or take the whole set of four:

• The Cat in the Hat: the Cat in his tall red-and-white striped hat on a blue sticker, UNIVERSAL'S ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE around the top. "Dr. Seuss properties TM & © 2006 Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P."
• Spider-Man: Spidey crouched and ready on a red sticker with the MARVEL SUPER HERO ISLAND starburst, UNIVERSAL'S ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE. "TM & © 2006 Marvel."

🎢 The Rides Behind the Stickers

Two of these came from Universal's Islands of Adventure, which officially opened on May 28, 1999. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man opened with the park that day, a 3D motion simulator and dark ride that took three years to develop, won a Thea Award in 2000, and won the Golden Ticket Award for Best Dark Ride for 12 years in a row. The Cat in the Hat ride lives in Seuss Landing, where, just like in the books, there are almost no straight lines anywhere. They even planted palm trees that had been bent by the winds of Hurricane Andrew to keep the look.

The other two were over at Universal Studios Florida, and both are gone now, which makes these stickers little pieces of lost theme park history. Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast opened on April 11, 2003, in the building that had held The Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera, sending riders on a rocket chase through the worlds of Jimmy, SpongeBob, the Rugrats and The Fairly OddParents. It closed for good on August 18, 2011, and Despicable Me Minion Mayhem took its place in 2012. Shrek 4-D, the 3D film with water and motion effects that follows Shrek and Donkey rescuing Fiona from the ghost of Lord Farquaad, opened in Orlando in June 2003 and closed on January 10, 2022.

🦸 Why Spider-Man Lives at Universal

That MARVEL SUPER HERO ISLAND starburst has a story behind it. Universal signed for the Marvel characters in the 1990s to build that part of Islands of Adventure, and when Disney bought Marvel in 2009 the old contract stayed in force. That's why, to this day, you can ride with Spider-Man in Orlando at Universal but Disney's Florida parks can't use the Marvel heroes Universal already had.

🏆 Shrek vs. Jimmy

Two of these stickers were rivals once. When the Academy gave out its very first Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2002, Shrek won it, and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius was one of the other two nominees, along with Monsters, Inc. A year later both of them had rides in the same Orlando park. Over in Seuss Landing, the builders went so far for the books' wobbly look that the Cat in the Hat ride sits among buildings with hardly a straight line on them.

Stick them on a laptop or a water bottle, or keep them in a scrapbook next to your old park tickets. They make a great little gift for anybody who grew up on these rides.
