🏺 The Karabakh Weaving Legacy

The Karabakh region — in the highlands where the Caucasus mountains give way to the lowlands of what is today Armenia and Azerbaijan — has been one of the great centers of rug weaving for centuries. The weavers of Karabakh developed a distinctive style within the broader Caucasian tradition: bold geometric designs, vivid natural-dye colors, and the characteristic boteh (paisley) motif that has appeared in Karabakh textiles for at least three centuries. Their runners — long, narrow rugs designed for corridors and entryways — are among the most sought-after examples of their tradition, combining the bold visual character of Caucasian design with an elegant elongated format that commands any hallway or staircase it graces. 🌿

🌀 The Boteh: The Paisley Before Paisley

The boteh is the teardrop-shaped motif that Westerners know as "paisley" — a name derived from the Scottish town where it was woven into shawls in imitation of the Kashmiri originals. But the boteh is ancient and Central Asian in origin, appearing in Persian, Caucasian, and Indian textiles for centuries before the Paisley mills existed. Its form suggests a bent cypress tree, a river bend, a flame, a coiled leaf — scholars have proposed all of these origins without settling the question. What is clear is that the boteh carries strong associations with life, growth, and spiritual force across many of the cultures that have woven it. In Karabakh weaving, the boteh appears in repeating rows across the field, each one rendered with the bold angularity of the Caucasian geometric tradition, creating a visual rhythm of extraordinary power. 🎨

🗺️ Terracotta and Olive: The Karabakh Palette

This Karabakh runner displays the characteristic rich terracotta field color that defines some of the most celebrated examples of the tradition. The madder-derived reds and terracottas of Caucasian rugs — produced from the roots of Rubia tinctorum grown in the region — are among the most prized natural dye colors in the textile world. Against this warm ground, the olive-toned borders and the geometric infill motifs create the tonal contrast that gives Caucasian rugs their distinctive visual presence. The palette is warm, deep, and richly layered — the visual signature of a great regional tradition. 🔴

📐 Construction and Condition

This runner is hand-knotted in wool — the standard construction for Caucasian pile rugs — made in Armenia. The pile thickness is approximately 0.35 in. The piece measures 3 ft 3 in by 12 ft 8 in — a classic runner proportion suited to hallways, entryways, staircases, or long narrow spaces where its full length can be appreciated. The condition reflects genuine age; the patina of use is part of the character of the piece. Professionally cleaned and inspected. Rug ID: K2013. 🔬

💎 Karabakh Rugs in the Collection World

Armenian Karabakh rugs are consistently collected in the major auction markets for antique textiles. Their combination of bold geometric design, rich natural-dye color, and the historical depth of the Caucasian weaving tradition makes them permanent favorites with serious collectors. This piece — a genuine antique runner in the repeating boteh design — represents the tradition at its most characteristic. All rugs in the Rugistan collection are professionally washed and treated before listing. 🏆
