Antique 1920s Orange Cove Fruits Crate Label packed by two associations — Orange Cove Fruit Growers Assn. for the grapes and Orange Cove Citrus Assn. for the oranges out of California. The historic references on the label are to the giant sequoias named General Grant, General Lee and General Sherman.

9" x 3 3/4" ~ Little to no wear.

In 1916, local growers in Orange Cove formed the Orange Cove Citrus Association to pack and market their oranges collectively.

Once a common sight, these Crate Labels have now become treasured relics of a bygone era. Their scarcity, a testament to their historical significance, adds to their allure. The impeccable lithography process used in their creation, which involves a stone or metal plate for design, is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail that went into their making. This process remains unparalleled, adding to the allure of these labels. The soaring demand for these labels, with museums and art institutions dedicating galleries to them, underscores their growing importance in the art and collectibles market. This makes them a must-have for any serious collector. The rarity of these labels adds a sense of urgency and importance to your purchase.

Picture this remarkable vintage advertising, a unique piece of history, adorning the walls of your home. Instead of being confined to a museum, it can bring a touch of nostalgia and unparalleled elegance to any room in your home, elevating the aesthetic and sophistication of your living space.

  • LITHO. IN U.S.A. WESTERN LITHO CO. LOS ANGELES

Printer: the lithographer is named on the sheet — LITHO. IN U.S.A. WESTERN LITHO CO. LOS ANGELES, set in microtype in the margin.

Orange Cove is a town, not the fruit. The brand printed on the sheet is ORANGE COVE FRUITS, and the label advertises BOTH commodities of the district: grapes packed under the Sovereign, Foothill and Growers brands by the Orange Cove Fruit Growers Assn., and oranges packed under the Orange Cove, Souvenir and O. C. brands by the Orange Cove Citrus Assn. Two separate associations are named on one sheet.

The label's own paragraph. Printed on the sheet in full: “Grown in Orange Cove District, located in Central California bordering the foothills of Sierra Nevada Mountains, almost in the shadow of those famous old Sequoia Redwood Trees, General Grant, General Lee and General Sherman.” Those are the names of three giant sequoias in the groves above the district — the label is talking about trees.
