🐶 A Faceted Bulldog Still Guards the Desk

Somebody's inkwell walked off a long time ago, but the dog stayed. He's a seated bulldog cut entirely from flat planes — no curves, just angle after angle catching the light — finished in black, with cream-ringed eyes watching you from under a jutting brow. He used to hold up somebody's ink. Now he just holds down a desk, and he's good at it.

📐 The Piece

He sits up at an angle on his base, head cocked to one side, one ear standing straight up and the other folded out flat — the kind of asymmetry that makes a figure feel alive instead of stamped out. Every surface is built from hard, flat facets: a squared muzzle, an angular skull, a raised collar band at the neck, and a chest and haunches faceted the same way, so the whole dog reads like he was carved from a block rather than modeled in the round. His eyes are cream-ringed with dark centers, set deep under the brow line.

The base beneath him is black and rectangular, with all four corners cut on the diagonal. Beside his front paws, a threaded brass post rises on a small tiered washer — that post is where a well, or a cap over one, used to screw down. Whatever sat there is gone now; the post is what's left of it. Flip the base over and the underside is finished in green felt. There's wear along one edge of the base where the black finish has rubbed down over the years, about the only sign of the years he's put in. The bulldog himself carries no such wear — he's in amazing shape. No maker's mark anywhere on him, front, back or underneath.

The flat facets and hard angles are the whole story here — that's what makes this a Deco piece. That geometric, faceted look took hold as the Art Deco style through the 1920s and 1930s, though pieces cut this way kept being made long after that heyday. Faceted animals like this were a popular desk novelty in their day, a way to dress up something as ordinary as an inkwell so it looked like it belonged on a desk instead of just working on one. Bulldogs got a lot of that treatment — stubborn, squat, a little comic, the same qualities that made the breed a favorite subject for small cast figures generally. What eventually changed was the inkwell's whole job: the self-filling pen, and then the ballpoint, took the inkwell off the desk, and figures like this one were left to work as decoration alone.
