The New York Knicks white. The home jersey of one of basketball's most iconic franchises — and signed by a player whose career had already produced a Rookie of the Year award, an All-Star start, and one of the most beloved sneaker commercials in the history of the sport before he ever put it on. Larry Johnson. Grandmama. The forward who arrived in New York carrying both immense talent and a body that had already started to betray him. Authenticated by Beckett BAS. Ready for your own frame, your wall, your way.

🌟 Tyler, Texas — UNLV — The Runnin' Rebels — Before Grandmama

Larry Johnson was born March 14, 1969, in Tyler, Texas — East Texas, where the football culture usually dominates the conversation but where Johnson's basketball gift set him apart from an early age. He played junior college ball before transferring to UNLV, where he became the engine of Jerry Tarkanian's Runnin' Rebels — the team that won the 1990 national championship in one of the most dominant title-game performances in NCAA history, an 103-73 demolition of Duke. Johnson was the National Player of the Year as a senior. When the Charlotte Hornets made him the first overall pick of the 1991 NBA Draft, they were getting a ready-made star.

🏆 Grandmama — The Most Beloved Sneaker Commercial of the 1990s

In 1991, Converse released the first in a series of commercials starring Larry Johnson as "Grandmama" — a fictional, basketball-dominating grandmother character, with Johnson in a floral dress, pearls, and a pillbox hat, dunking on unsuspecting opponents. The ads became a cultural phenomenon, one of the most quoted and replayed sneaker campaigns of the decade, and turned Johnson into a crossover star well beyond the box score. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1992 and started the 1993 All-Star Game — the first Charlotte Hornet ever to receive that honor — averaging 22.1 points and 10.5 rebounds that season, numbers that placed him among the very best power forwards in the league.

⭐ The Trade to New York — The Back Injury — 1999 Eastern Conference Finals

In 1996, the Hornets traded Larry Johnson to the New York Knicks — a move driven in part by a chronic back injury that had already begun to sap the explosiveness that made him a Rookie of the Year and an All-Star starter in Charlotte. In New York, Johnson reinvented his game around positioning, passing, and clutch shot-making rather than the pure athleticism of his Charlotte years. He became a key rotation piece on the Knicks team that reached the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Finals as the 8th seed — still one of the most improbable postseason runs in league history. The chronic back problems eventually forced his retirement in October 2001, ending a career that had begun with as much hype and crossover fame as any player of his generation.
