⚾ Mark McGwire Signed St. Louis Cardinals White Baseball Jersey — JSA COA — 70 HR Single-Season Record, 1998

The summer of 1998 was the most captivating baseball season in living memory for a generation of fans. Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals and Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs were chasing Roger Maris's single-season home run record of 61, set in 1961 — a mark that had stood for 37 years as one of the most enduring records in American sports. The entire country watched. Television ratings climbed. Baseball, which had been battered by the 1994 labor stoppage and struggling to reclaim the casual fans it had lost, found itself at the center of the American sporting conversation again. McGwire finished with 70 home runs — breaking the record by nine. Sosa finished with 66. It was one of the most memorable individual record-breaking performances in the history of professional sports.

Born October 1, 1963 in Pomona, California, McGwire came through USC and was drafted by the Oakland A's in the 1984 draft. In 1987, his first full Major League season, he hit 49 home runs — setting the rookie record that stood until Aaron Judge broke it with 62 in 2022. He was 6'5" of raw power — the swing mechanics, the launch angle, the raw strength all pointing to a player who could hit a baseball further than almost anyone who had ever played. He hit 583 career home runs. Made 12 All-Star appearances. Won three Silver Slugger awards. And in 1998, in a Cardinals uniform, he put together one of the most talked-about single-season performances in baseball history.

McGwire admitted to steroid use in 2010, a disclosure that has shaped his historical legacy and his Hall of Fame standing. But the records, the memories, and the role he played in the summer of 1998 — when baseball needed a story and he provided one — are permanent fixtures in the history of the game. McGwire signed this St. Louis Cardinals white baseball jersey. JSA authenticated. Display your way — the McGwire Cardinals White collectible from Pomona, California — 70 home runs, the summer of 1998, the record chase that brought the country back to the ballpark.
