He came up through the system as a switch hitter with blazing speed, became the centerfielder of the early 1980s Mets, and by 1986 was part of a team that New York fell completely in love with — the Strawberry and Gooden and Hernandez and Carter Mets, the loud and talented and colorful team that won 108 games in the regular season and then took the World Series to seven games against the Boston Red Sox and won.
