Dial H for Hero originated in 1966 in House of Mystery — the idea of a magical dial that transforms the user into a random superhero, different every time — a concept so elegantly simple and creatively fertile that it’s been revisited multiple times across DC’s history. Sam Humphries and Joe Quinones’ 2019–2020 version gave the concept its most emotionally resonant execution: Miguel, a troubled teenager who feels like a nobody, discovers the H-Dial and is transformed into a different hero each time he uses it — and must confront the gap between what the dial makes him and who he is when it’s not active. Quinones’ art is extraordinarily imaginative — each of the different heroes Miguel becomes is fully designed and visually distinct, giving the series a visual variety that few comics could match.
