🌟 David Ortiz — Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Released by the Twins; Found in Boston

David Ortiz was born November 18, 1975, in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic — the Caribbean island nation that has given professional baseball more talent per capita than any country outside the United States, and that gave the sport, in Ortiz, one of its most enduring and human figures. He signed with the Seattle Mariners as an international free agent and was traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he played from 1997 to 2002. After the 2002 season, the Twins released him. He was a 27-year-old player who had never hit more than 20 home runs in a major league season, and the franchise that had developed him decided to let him go. What happened next — the Boston Red Sox signing him for a modest sum in January 2003 — is one of the great evaluation stories in the history of the sport. Ortiz became Big Papi and became the most important hitter in Boston Red Sox history.

🏆 The 2004 ALCS — The 2004 World Series — The Curse of the Bambino Finally Broken

David Ortiz was the central figure in the most dramatic comeback in baseball playoff history. The 2004 Boston Red Sox were down 0-3 in the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees — no team in baseball history had ever come back from an 0-3 deficit in a seven-game series. In Game 4, Ortiz hit a walk-off two-run home run in the 12th inning. In Game 5, he hit a walk-off single in the 14th inning. The Red Sox won Games 6 and 7 and became the first team in baseball history to come back from 0-3. They then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series in four games, ending 86 years without a championship in Boston — the Curse of the Bambino, broken. Ortiz hit .400 in the World Series with three home runs and ten RBI across the two series. Big Papi. The man who carried Boston through the playoff run that defined a generation of Red Sox fans.

2013 World Series MVP — This Is Our City — Baseball Hall of Fame 2022

In 2013, the Boston Red Sox won their third World Series of the Ortiz era — defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in six games. David Ortiz was named the World Series MVP after hitting .688 in the series with a home run and six RBI, the highest batting average by any player in World Series history. The 2013 season had begun in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, and Ortiz's speech at Fenway Park before the next home game — ending with the declaration that Boston would not be intimidated — became one of the most memorable moments in the city's recent history. He won the World Series that October. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022, first ballot. 10x All-Star. 541 career home runs. The most beloved player in Boston sports history. The road grey signed by Ortiz belongs on your wall. JSA authenticated. Framed at 35x39. Hang it today.
