The New York Giants selected him second overall in the 1981 draft, and within two seasons it was already apparent that what they had was something entirely different from anything the NFL had produced at that position before. His combination of first-step explosion off the line of scrimmage, closing speed to the quarterback, and physical strength to play the run from the edge forced offensive coordinators across the league to redesign blocking schemes specifically to try to account for him. They largely failed. LT sacked the quarterback on passing downs, stopped the run on early downs, and changed his team's fortunes every time he stepped onto the field. 🏈 The 1986 NFL season produced Lawrence Taylor's MVP campaign – one of only two times in the history of the award that a defensive player won the honor, the other being Alan Page in 1971. That season Taylor recorded 20.5 sacks, led the Giants to a 14-2 regular season record, and anchored a defense that allowed the fewest points in the NFL. New York crushed San Francisco and Washington in the playoffs before defeating Denver 39-20 in Super Bowl XXI at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. A year later, the Giants repeated as champions in Super Bowl XXII. LT was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999, and in 2019 the NFL named him to its All-Time Team – the panel's recognition of the best at every position in the sport's first 100 years.
