Description

🎬 Graded 1888 Allen & Ginter World's Smokers N33 Suabian Peasant Baseball Tobacco Card PSA 6 – A Survivor from the Nineteenth Century, One of the Most Historically Significant Card-Issuing Companies in American History, from a Set That Preceded the Modern Hobby by Over a Century, Graded PSA 6 and Sealed Against the Further Passage of Time

🎬 Before Topps, before Bowman, before the concept of a “rookie card” existed – before there was an industry of collecting, a grading company to certify condition, or a hobby in the sense that we would recognize today – there was Allen & Ginter. The Richmond, Virginia tobacco company printed and distributed some of the first trading cards in American history during the 1880s and 1890s, inserting illustrated cards into cigarette packages as a marketing device that created an entirely unanticipated cultural practice. What they started, in cards made of heavy paper stock and illustrated by hand in an era before photographic reproduction was practical, became the foundational chapter of one of the most significant collecting categories in American culture. 🎬

🎬 The N33 “World's Smokers” set, produced in 1888, featured illustrated figures from cultures and regions across the globe – a catalog of the world as understood by a Victorian-era American tobacco company, depicted in the lithographic style of the period. The Suabian Peasant card represents the Swabia region, the historical territory of southwestern Germany and the surrounding area, depicted in the traditional peasant attire that defined regional cultural identity in nineteenth-century central Europe. It is a visual artifact of how 1888 saw the world – ethnographic, illustrative, and produced at a scale that made these cards genuinely common objects in their moment and genuinely rare objects in ours. 🎬

🎬 PSA 6 is an outstanding grade for an 1888 tobacco card. These pieces of illustrated cardstock survived the 1890s, survived the early twentieth century when old cards had no recognized value and were discarded without consideration, survived two World Wars and the accompanying paper drives, survived the mid-century decades when the hobby of the Victorian era had been completely replaced by the Bowman and Topps era, and arrived in the modern grading era as objects that collectors who understand history immediately recognize as extraordinary. A PSA 6 from 1888 means the card has survived 137 years and emerged with grades that reflect a piece of genuine quality. Condition: NOS. 🎬
