🏈 Barry Sanders 1989 Pro Set #494 Rookie RC PSA 10 GEM MINT — Detroit Lions Running Back — Wichita, Kansas — Oklahoma State Cowboys — 1988 Heisman Trophy Winner — 10x NFL Rushing Title — 2,358 Single-Season Rushing Record in 1997 — Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 1999 — PSA 10 GEM MINT Certified

🏈 A PSA 10 GEM MINT certified Barry Sanders 1989 Pro Set #494 rookie card — from the 1989 Pro Set football product, one of the mass-market trading card sets that documented the first generation of NFL players during the junk wax era, and within it one of the most significant rookie cards of any player in professional football history. Barry Sanders, the Detroit Lions running back who played 10 NFL seasons and then retired at age 30 while still near the peak of his physical ability, is captured here in his first Pro Set document at the start of a career that ended before anyone had expected it to end and that left the football world with one of the sport's most discussed 'what-if' narratives. PSA 10 GEM MINT: the maximum grade on a 1989 card that has survived over 35 years at the top condition standard. Condition: NOS.

🌟 Wichita, Kansas — North High School — Oklahoma State Cowboys — The 1988 Heisman Trophy — 2,628 Rushing Yards in a Single Season

Barry Sanders was born July 16, 1968, in Wichita, Kansas — the largest city in Kansas, a mid-continent industrial and aviation city on the Arkansas River where the football culture runs through the Wichita North High School programs and the wider Kansas athletic infrastructure. He attended Oklahoma State University as a Cowboy, where in 1988 he produced the most statistically overwhelming single-season performance in college football history: 2,628 rushing yards, 37 rushing touchdowns, 39 total touchdowns in 11 games — numbers so far above what any previous college player had produced that they essentially created a new statistical category. He won the 1988 Heisman Trophy unanimously and became the most anticipated running back prospect entering the 1989 NFL Draft since perhaps ever. Condition: NOS.

Detroit Lions — 3rd Overall Pick 1989 — The Barry Sanders Era — A Decade of Individual Excellence in a Franchise Without Championships

The Detroit Lions selected Barry Sanders with the third overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, and what followed was a decade in which the Detroit Lions were simultaneously the best and worst thing in professional football: the best because Barry Sanders played for them, producing some of the most extraordinary individual running performances in NFL history year after year; the worst because the franchise never built a championship-caliber team around his ability, sending him to the playoffs rarely and never to the Super Bowl. Sanders won the NFL rushing title 10 times in his 10 professional seasons, rushed for over 1,000 yards in all 10 of those seasons, and in 1997 set the single-season NFL rushing record of 2,358 yards — a mark that has only been approached once in the decades since. He retired in 1999 at age 30, less than 1,500 yards from Walter Payton's all-time rushing record, leaving the game on his own terms in a decision that the football world has debated ever since. Condition: NOS.

🏆 The Pro Football Hall of Fame — Class of 1999 — The Most Elusive Runner the Sport Has Ever Produced

Barry Sanders was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999 — the same year he retired — in a first-ballot selection that required no debate. The statistical case is overwhelming: 15,269 career rushing yards (second all-time at retirement, now fourth), 10 rushing titles, 6 All-Pro selections, 10 Pro Bowls. But the statistical case doesn't capture what made Barry Sanders unique: the cuts, the sudden direction changes, the ability to absorb contact from multiple defenders simultaneously and emerge upright and moving forward, the runs that started as losses and ended as gains because no one could bring him down in a crowd. The 1989 Pro Set #494 PSA 10 GEM MINT is the maximum-grade certified document of the Wichita product at the beginning of the career that produced all of it. Condition: NOS.
