⚾ 1989 Upper Deck John Smoltz #17 Star Rookie RC — PSA 10 Gem Mint

The card. The grade. The 1989 Upper Deck John Smoltz #17 Star Rookie graded PSA 10 Gem Mint — a high-grade example from the most important trading card set of the post-war era, the 1989 Upper Deck release that changed the economics and aesthetics of the hobby simultaneously by producing a high-gloss, full-bleed card on UV-coated stock when every other manufacturer was still printing on the same chipboard they'd used for decades. A PSA 10 from this set is extraordinary. And this one carries the name of a Hall of Famer.

John Smoltz from Warren, Michigan — the Detroit suburb in Macomb County where Smoltz grew up and played baseball before the Atlanta Braves took him in the 22nd round of the 1985 MLB Draft and built him into one of the most versatile pitching talents in the sport's modern history. He was traded from the Detroit Tigers to Atlanta in August 1987 in exchange for Doyle Alexander — a trade the Tigers won immediately (Alexander went 9-0 in the pennant race) and lost completely in the long run, as Smoltz spent the next two decades becoming a Braves legend.

The Cy Young Award in 1996: 24-8, 2.94 ERA, 276 strikeouts. The 14 consecutive division titles with the Atlanta Braves from 1991-2005. The 1995 World Series championship. And then the decision: rather than remain a starter, Smoltz moved to the closer role in 2001 and recorded 154 saves over four seasons, including 55 in 2002 — before returning to the starting rotation in 2005. The only player in major league history to both win the Cy Young Award as a starter and record 150 saves as a closer. HOF 2015.

📋 1989 Upper Deck — The Set That Changed Everything

The cards came in at $1 per pack at a time when Topps and Donruss sold for 15-25 cents. Collectors complained about the price. Then they pulled the Ken Griffey Jr. #1 and understood why the investment was worth it. The set produced iconic rookies throughout: Griffey at #1, Randy Johnson's SP variation, and Smoltz at #17 in the Star Rookie subset, the yellow-star-banner design on a glossy full-bleed background that made every card look like something worth protecting from day one.

A PSA 10 from 1989 Upper Deck represents over 37 years of preservation. The UV coating Upper Deck pioneered helped, but corners and edges and surfaces still accumulate wear across decades — the storage decisions made by collectors in 1989 who didn't know they were holding future PSA 10 candidates, and who handled these cards as cards, not as artifacts. The ones that survived to earn a 10 from PSA are the survivors of a long gauntlet. This one passed. PSA 10. Gem Mint. From the same legendary set as the Griffey #1.
