Some remedies are so ordinary in hindsight that we forget they were once a genuine pharmaceutical workhorse — trusted, reliable, and dispensed by name across an entire country. Cascara was exactly that kind of remedy, and this small label is a direct, physical link to the chemist who prepared and sold it.
This is an original New Old Stock (NOS) pharmacy label for a Cascara preparation, issued by C. Charnley, Grove Pharmacy, Wilmslow, Cheshire, England, dating to the 1910s–1920s. It measures 3½ x 2 inches, printed in cream and black with the crisp, confident typography that marks Charnley's documented label output. Like his other surviving labels, it was never applied to a bottle — it comes to you exactly as it left the printer, uncreased and unused.
Cascara — from cascara sagrada, Spanish for "sacred bark" — is derived from the bark of the buckthorn tree native to the Pacific Northwest of North America, and it became one of the most widely used natural laxatives in Western medicine from the late nineteenth century well into the twentieth. Its mild, reliable action made it a staple preparation at pharmacies across Britain and America alike, dispensed in tinctures, extracts, and compound preparations exactly like the one this label once identified.
Charles Charnley's Grove Pharmacy is one of the better-documented small British chemist shops of this era. The Wellcome Collection in London holds his personal recipe books, dated from 1866, and a prescription register spanning 1869 to 1925, while a 1938 Stockport Advertiser notice confirms the pharmacy was still trading under his name in the late 1930s. Charnley was dispensing to his Wilmslow community across more than seventy documented years, and cascara — gentle, dependable, and in constant demand — would have been a routine part of that daily trade.
This label shares the same clean, businesslike lithographic printing style as Charnley's other pharmacy labels — cream stock, confident black lettering, sized for a small dispensing bottle, and built for legibility across a busy pharmacy counter rather than decorative flourish.
