If you were a kid in 1988, this isn't a vague memory, it's a specific one, and it probably involves a molded plastic case just like this one.

🏫 A McDonaldland Case, Sticker Sheet and All

A 1988 McDonald's Happy Meal storage case: one hinged, two-compartment plastic box in the color you pick, with its own uncut sticker sheet still inside. Each case has a Golden Arches "M" carry handle and a snap latch, and one of the trays inside has a row of molded vent slots. You get one case in one color with its own sheet. I photograph the red and the green together just to show them side by side. And it still does its job - the hinge and snap clasp work as designed - for crayons, Matchbox cars, Legos, craft supplies, keepsakes. It was never sold in stores, either: it came free with a Happy Meal.

The lid scene is embossed right into the plastic: a little schoolhouse marked "School," a STOP sign, the Fry Kids, Grimace, and Ronald with the arches on his apron, all set in rolling countryside. It's back-to-school through and through: the schoolhouse has the Golden Arches on its gable and a bell up in the belfry, Ronald is the crossing guard holding up that STOP sign, one of the Fry Kids is balancing a stack of schoolbooks on its head, and Grimace is lugging an armload of books with an apple for the teacher on top. Turn the case around and the back is embossed as a "BULLETIN BOARD," with a wood-grain frame and little A, B and C cards pinned up on it: an apple, a teddy bear and a cat. The sticker sheet is unpeeled and printed "(c) 1988 McDonald's Corporation / McD #87-172 / FC McDY-682 / Printed in United States of America," with Ronald holding a STOP paddle, the Hamburglar driving a "SCHOOL" bus, a smiling apple, big-eyed ABC letters, four Fry Kids sitting on a ruler, and Grimace skipping rope.

🍟 On the Go, Back to School

This was McDonald's "On the Go" Happy Meal of 1988, which ran nationally from August 12 to September 8, just in time for parents shopping for school supplies. It paired vinyl lunch bags with these lunchbox-style cases, and the cases came in several colors, each with its own sheet. I have the red and the green. The story among collectors is that kids traded and swapped to finish the set, and that the box usually survives but the sticker sheet almost never does. Old-timers in McDonald's memorabilia circles still argue about which color was hardest to land in their town. I think McDonald's knew exactly which kid it was talking to. This was the decade of the Trapper Keeper, which Mead tried out in Wichita in 1978 and took nationwide in 1981, and of the big sticker craze, when kids collected and traded scratch-and-sniffs and puffy stickers by the album-full. A lunch case that came with its own sheet of stickers was right on the money. By the back half of the 1980s the Happy Meal calendar had become its own little institution, and McDonald's dropped its McDonaldland cast into every season: the Halloween pails started in 1986, Christmas brought plush ornaments, and 1987 brought the Changeables, the burgers and fries that turned into robots. Back-to-school got this case.

🎈 The Happy Meal and McDonaldland

The Happy Meal itself came out of Kansas City. Bob Bernstein, whose Bernstein-Rein agency had worked for McDonald's franchisees since 1967, got the idea watching his son read a cereal box at breakfast. That was his lightbulb moment - "The package is the key!" - and the first Happy Meal boxes were paperboard lunch pails with Golden Arches handles, covered in jokes, games and comics, with a little toy inside. Look at the handle on this case and you can see the idea come full circle. It was tested in Kansas City in October 1977 and went national in 1979. The characters on this case come from McDonaldland, the world McDonald's built for its TV commercials starting in January 1971. Mayor McCheese and the Hamburglar arrived that year, and Grimace showed up in November 1971 as "Evil Grimace," a villain with two pairs of arms who stole milkshakes. By 1972 McDonald's had dropped the "Evil" and one pair of arms and made him everybody's friend. The Fry Kids go back to 1972 too, when they first turned up as the Gobblins, shaggy little creatures out to steal everybody's french fries, and the two on the sheet with bows in their hair are Fry Girls. And the Hamburglar riding that school bus is the friendlier Hamburglar McDonald's brought back in 1985, after years of playing the bad guy. His whole act was the bumbling burger thief who went "robble, robble" and never quite got away with it. McDonald's still keeps every toy it ever put in a Happy Meal in its archives, looked after by its archivist Mike Bullington, so these little cases are part of the company's own history.

And a lot of these go to grown-up kids buying back the one they carried to school - sometimes to keep, sometimes to hand down to a grandkid who's never had a Happy Meal from a box quite like this one.
