🦆 Meet the Family

This is a mother duck on wheels, towing three ducklings behind her on rigid metal rods, so the whole little line moves — and stops — together. Every one of them, mother and ducklings alike, wears its own striped racing cap with a pair of goggles and a teal collar, all of it lithographed straight onto the tin: sunny yellow bodies, orange bills, red cheek circles, wing panels striped in pink, brown, cream and white. It's the same kind of tin wind-up old-timers remember off the five-and-dime counter, and it knows it's grown up now: the mother duck's back carries a silver sticker that reads "FOR COLLECTORS NOT FOR CHILDREN," just above "MADE IN CHINA" printed in a little red oval on the tin. Mine vary a little one to the next, but every one meets the baseline promised up top.

The box gives you the company outright: Bandwagon, Inc., Wilmington, MA 01887, item number K7521, "TIN DUCK FAMILY." Business directories place Bandwagon as a gifts-and-novelties company, founded in 1953 and filed as an importer — which tells you what kind of outfit this was. Bandwagon wasn't running a tin-stamping line in Massachusetts; they were the American name on the box, sourcing a playful little novelty like this one and putting their own label on it for the gift-shop trade. I've come across other Bandwagon tin wind-ups on the resale market too — a motorcycle with a sidecar, an ice-cream vendor cart — so this duck family wasn't a one-off for them.

🍎 Wilmington, Massachusetts

I always look up the town printed on the box, and Wilmington turned out to be a good one. It's a Middlesex County town north of Boston, first settled in 1665 and incorporated in 1730 out of pieces of Woburn, Reading and Billerica, and named for Spencer Compton, the 1st Earl of Wilmington. It was farm country for a long time. Middlesex County was known for its hop yards, and Wilmington was where the hop craze first ran hottest, with cranberries alongside. It's also the birthplace of the Baldwin apple: a chance seedling that came up on John Ball's farm soon after 1740, found near Wood Hill by William Butters, as local tradition tells it, and brought to the attention of Colonel Loammi Baldwin, whose name stuck to it. Through the 1800s it was the most popular apple in New England, until the hard winter of 1934 wiped out a lot of the orchards. There's still a monument marking where the first tree grew wild. It blew down in the gale of 1815. Since World War II the town's population has quadrupled, and that newer, busier Wilmington is the one Bandwagon was shipping tin ducks out of.

🗓️ How I Know It's Not as Old as It Looks

Nothing on the toy or the box prints an actual year — no date stamp, no copyright line. But the box didn't need one, because it prints something federal law dated for us instead: "WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD – Small parts. Not for Children under 3 years." That's the exact wording the Child Safety Protection Act made mandatory, starting January 1, 1995, on every small-parts toy made or imported into the U.S. Any box carrying it is 1995 or later, which puts this duck family squarely in the 1990s.

🌏 One Duck, More Than One Name

This isn't a design Bandwagon dreamed up on their own. The same mother-and-ducklings toy turns up in other importers' boxes too, sold as "Duck Family Funny Action" and marked Made in China — same lithographed tin, same rod-linked family, just a different company's name on the front. It's a Chinese-made toy that reached American shelves under more than one label, and Bandwagon's box is simply the version that made it to you.
