Description

⚔️ From the Ancient Caucasus — Antique 1880s Shirvan Geometric Wool Rug from Azerbaijan

The Shirvan district of Azerbaijan, situated along the western shore of the Caspian Sea between the Caucasus mountains and the great river delta, has been one of the most prolific and celebrated rug-producing regions in the world since at least the 16th century. Shirvan rugs are recognized by their distinctive geometric vocabulary — dense all-over field designs using lozenge lattices, stylized animals and human figures, stepped medallions, and the bold border work that defines Caucasian tribal weaving at its most powerful. This antique example, dating to the 1880s and in excellent stable condition, is an extraordinary survivor of Caucasian weaving from its pre-industrial golden age. 🌿

🧵 Hand-Knotted in Azerbaijan — 1880s

Crafted entirely by hand from natural wool using the traditional Caucasian knotting technique practiced in the Shirvan district, this rug was made in the 1880s — when Shirvan production was still entirely driven by tribal and village weavers working within living traditions unchanged for centuries. The natural dyes include indigo blues, madder reds, and a range of plant-based supplementary tones. Professionally washed and treated. ✨

🎨 Human and Animal Motifs in Classic Shirvan Geometric Design

The design features the characteristic Shirvan vocabulary — a field populated with stylized human and animal motifs embedded within a geometric lattice framework, surrounded by multiple border bands in the bold Shirvan tradition. Animal and human figures in Shirvan rugs connect directly to pre-Islamic Caucasian tribal symbolism and are among the most prized design elements in the entire corpus of Caucasian rug art. Abrash (natural color variation) on one end adds authentic character and age confirmation. 🔶

📐 Generous Proportions

At approximately 4 ft 10 in by 10 ft 2 in, this Shirvan is a long runner-format piece ideal for a formal hallway, dining room, staircase landing, or accent placement in a large room. 🏡

🌍 The Shirvan Weaving Heritage

Shirvan rugs have been collected by Western connoisseurs since the 19th century, when the great age of Caucasian rug collecting began. The Shirvan district produced a prolific range of pile rug types — including the Akstafa with its peacock and bird motifs, the Marasali with prayer arch compositions, and the classic all-over geometric Shirvan — that together constitute one of the richest regional traditions in the world. An 1880s example in good stable condition with human and animal motifs is a rare and significant collector's piece. 🌐

Condition

Overall good condition with areas of low pile and natural abrash on one end as visible in photos — authentic hallmarks of age and authenticity. Professionally washed and treated. Item ID: 1532.

🏡 Perfect For
