Description

🏔️ The Shahsavan Soumak: Flatweave Mastery from the Soviet-Era Caucasus

The Shahsavan — sometimes written Shahsevan, meaning "those who love the Shah" in Persian — are a tribal confederation of Azerbaijan and northwestern Persia whose history interweaves with the political transformations of the Caucasus across several centuries. By the early 20th century, the Shahsavan who inhabited the Soviet-administered regions of Azerbaijan were working in a textile tradition already centuries old: the soumak flatweave, in which supplementary wefts are wrapped over the warp in a counting pattern to build up the geometric design from the face of the textile, creating a dense, reversible surface with the characteristic herringbone texture on the reverse. 🌿

📐 The Soumak Technique and Shahsavan Design

The soumak weft-wrapping technique produces a textile quite unlike a knotted pile rug in its visual and tactile character. Where knotted pile creates a soft, three-dimensional surface, the soumak face is dense and smooth — firm underfoot, durable in use, and displaying the geometric patterning in a flat, graphic manner that gives these pieces their specific visual strength. The Shahsavan geometric vocabulary — bold stripes, geometric medallions, and a rich palette running from deep reds through cream into blues and blacks — creates a powerfully graphic composition that represents the best tradition of Caucasian flatweave production. 🎨

📐 Construction and Condition

Hand-woven in the Soumak technique, 100% natural wool, made in the USSR (Caucasus region). Approximately 100 years old. The piece measures 4 ft 9 in by 7 ft 4 in. Condition: antique, with wear consistent with age. Professionally cleaned and inspected. Rug Number: K1623. 🔬

💎 Caucasian Soumak Textiles in the Collector World

Antique Caucasian soumak textiles from the Shahsavan tradition — particularly those from the early Soviet period — are consistently collected in the tribal and antique textile market. Their combination of genuine antique age, the specific visual authority of the soumak flatweave technique, and the bold Caucasian geometric design vocabulary makes them prized additions to any collection of Central Asian and Caucasian tribal textiles. All rugs in the Rugistan collection are professionally washed and treated before listing. 🏆
