Description

🌙 Tribal Heraldry in Wool — Antique Kizil Ayak Turkoman Chuval Bag Face from Turkmenistan

The Kizil Ayak (Red Foot) are one of the most distinctive Turkmen tribal groups, producing bag faces and pile woven textiles of exceptional quality and characteristic design vocabulary. Like all Turkmen tribal weavings, their chuval bag faces — created as the face panels of large nomadic tent bags — served as both functional objects and declarations of tribal identity, encoding family lineage and group affiliation into every motif and border. This antique Kizil Ayak chuval, hand-knotted in Turkmenistan, is a rare and remarkable specimen of this tradition. 🌿

🧵 Hand-Knotted in Turkmenistan — Antique

Crafted entirely by hand from fine natural wool using the traditional Turkmen hand-knotting technique, this chuval displays the characteristic features of Kizil Ayak production — Tschowal guls of the Kizilayak Turkmen alongside secondary Sharch Palak guls associated with other Turkoman tribes. The pile is uniformly low throughout with intact selvedges and fringe — good stable antique condition. Professionally washed and treated. ✨

🎨 Kizil Ayak Gul Design and Yomud Border Work

The design features nine large Tschowal guls of the Kizilayak Turkmen arranged across the field, with a Yomud Asmalyk star border and running dog guard bands in the repeating stylized scroll form characteristic of the Yomud border vocabulary. The abrash — natural color variation in the hand-dyed wool — confirms age and authenticity, adding depth and visual interest to the deep red ground. 🔶

📐 Dimensions

Measuring 34 by 60 inches (approximately 2 ft 10 in by 5 ft), this chuval is ideally sized for wall mounting as textile art, display in a case, or as a fine floor accent in a curated space. 🖼️

🌍 Kizil Ayak Turkoman Heritage

The Kizil Ayak are one of the Turkmen tribal groups whose weaving has been most intensely studied by Central Asian textile scholars. Their use of the distinctive Tschowal gul — shared with neighboring tribes but rendered with characteristic variation — allows identification of individual tribal production. Antique Kizil Ayak chuval pieces are actively collected by serious textile museums and private scholars worldwide. 🌐

Condition

Uniform low pile throughout. Intact selvedges and fringe. Age wear consistent with antique status. Professionally washed and treated. Rug #1552.
