🏔️ The Jajim: Anatolia's Great Flatweave Tradition

The jajim (also written jijim, cicim, or cecim) is one of the oldest and most technically sophisticated of Anatolia's flatweave traditions. Unlike the knotted pile rug, the jajim is a weft-faced supplementary weave or double-interlocking flatweave in which supplementary wefts carry the pattern across the ground warp, creating a dense, flat-faced textile with identical pattern on both faces. The jajim tradition spans Anatolia, northwestern Iran, and Azerbaijan, and produces some of the most graphically powerful textiles in the Near Eastern weaving world — bold geometric patterns, strong color contrasts, and a graphic directness that comes from the flatweave medium at its most expressive. 🌿

🔶 The Anatolian Geometric Vocabulary

The geometric vocabulary of Anatolian jajim production — diamond lattices, stepped medallions, angular botanical forms, stripes and reciprocating patterns — is one of the oldest and most persistent design traditions in textile history, echoing motifs that appear in the earliest known Central Asian and Near Eastern weavings. The 1930s production date of this piece places it in the mature period of Anatolian village flatweave production, when the jajim tradition had achieved its characteristic combination of technical refinement and bold geometric expression. 🎨

📐 Construction and Condition

Hand-woven in the Jajim flatweave technique, 100% wool, made in Turkey. The piece measures 5 ft 5 in by 14 ft 5 in — a grand runner format appropriate to the long, narrow applications for which jajim flatweaves are traditionally used. Condition: good for its age, with some size variations consistent with hand-woven production. Professionally cleaned and inspected. Item ID: K1852. 🔬

💎 Antique Turkish Jajim Textiles in the Collector World

Antique Anatolian jajim flatweaves from the 1930s are collected both as decorative textiles and as significant examples of the Anatolian flatweave tradition. Their combination of genuine antique age, the specifically graphic character of the flatweave medium, and the bold Anatolian geometric design vocabulary makes them prized acquisitions in the tribal textile field. All rugs in the Rugistan collection are professionally washed and treated before listing. 🏆
