Description

If you already love Lucky Bill, this is the piece you almost never see: an Antique Lucky Bill gold embossed cigar box back flap label from the early 1900s 🍀

Printed between the 1900s and 1920s and measuring about 4" x 2", this label would have been applied to the inside edge or back flap of the cigar box. It carries the Lucky Bill name in raised, gold‑outlined letters across a soft green field, with a red shield and laurel leaves tying it into the rest of the brand’s artwork. It’s pure graphic punch—no portrait here—designed to flash the brand name every time the lid opened and closed.

🔎 Rarer than the famous inner

Most collectors know Lucky Bill from the big inner picture label and the square outers; those were printed in large numbers and saved in bundles. Back flaps were different. They were printed in smaller runs, glued to boxes, and almost always tossed when the wood was burned or discarded. Surviving examples usually come from printer’s files and leftover stock, not from used boxes.

That’s why you’ll see Lucky Bill inners for sale regularly—but matching back flaps are thin on the ground, especially in clean, unused condition like this. If you’re building a full “paper box” on your wall, this is the piece that takes it from “nice label” to “complete face of the brand.”

🎨 Gold embossing and the lost art of labels

This flap shows off the same craftsmanship that made cigar‑box art famous:

  • Multi‑color lithography on quality stock.

  • Deep embossing that raises the letters and scrolls so you can feel them.

  • Gold‑tone bronzing on the raised areas to mimic real gold leaf.

Cigar‑label historians like to point out that this combination of techniques largely disappeared after the 1920s, once cheaper printing methods took over. That makes pieces like this not just brand collectibles, but survivors of a short, intense era of printing excellence.
