Description

🧹 Antique Mayflower broom label – Syracuse sailing ship ready to frame

This antique Mayflower broom label is unused NOS stock from the 1920s–1930s and measures about 4 inches by 3 inches, with a distinctive octagonal (8-sided) die-cut shape that makes it perfect for framing as nautical or Americana wall art. The design features a detailed sailing ship (the Mayflower) with full rigging on dark blue-green water under a golden moon or sun, all framed by a bright yellow octagonal border. The word "MAYFLOWER" appears in large yellow letters across the bottom of the central image, with company text reading "A.F. WEYMER CO. INC. / SYRACUSE, N.Y."

Made by A.F. Weymer Company, Syracuse broom maker

The A.F. Weymer Company was one of Syracuse, New York's prominent broom manufacturers during the early-to-mid 20th century, operating from at least the 1910s through the mid-century. In 1925, the A.F. Weymer Broom Co. was located at 306 West Division Street in Syracuse, and the company produced a wide range of broom labels with different brand names and themes, including the Mayflower, Mother Goose Brand (woman riding a goose), and The Witch Brand (witch on broom with full moon and bat). Syracuse was a significant center for broom manufacturing in the early 20th century, with multiple factories and supporting industries like the Lipe-Walrath Company, which manufactured broom-sewing machines, and A.F. Weymer was one of the larger and longer-lasting broom operations in that regional industry.

🎨 Mayflower branding and American symbolism

The Mayflower ship—famous for carrying Pilgrims to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620—was a powerful American symbol throughout the early 20th century, representing patriotism, American origins, and the pioneer spirit that shaped the nation. For a broom maker, the Mayflower brand signaled tradition, reliability, and American-made quality, while the tall ship with full sails made for dramatic, eye-catching label art that stood out on store shelves and in homes. A.F. Weymer used multiple themed labels to create distinct "brands" or product lines within their catalog, each targeting different buyer aesthetics or regional preferences, and the Mayflower design became one of their most recognizable.

🏛️ From Syracuse factory to collectible nautical art

Most Mayflower broom labels were wrapped around broom handles, displayed on store shelves across New York and neighboring states, and eventually thrown away when the broom was used up. Unused NOS examples like this survived because a printer or broom company saved leftover stock in a drawer or storeroom instead of using every last sheet. Today, collectors of Syracuse advertising history, nautical and sailing ship art, Americana, Pilgrim memorabilia, and vintage broom labels seek out A.F. Weymer designs as some of the most graphic and historically interesting examples from the region's broom industry.

This Mayflower label is perfect for framing in a kitchen, hallway, office, or nautical-themed room, displayed as part of a sailing ship or Americana gallery wall, or added to a collection of Syracuse history or early 20th-century advertising ephemera.

Approx. 4" x 3", octagonal die-cut shape, original lithographed broom label by A.F. Weymer Co. Inc., Syracuse, N.Y., NOS, ready to frame, gift, or add to your collection.
